How is it that Ichigo's dad can be a shinigami? I've been pondering this for awhile now..How is it possible? In order to be a shinigami you have to die don't you? So how can somebody who is suppose to be a shinigami (and possibly a captain at that too!!!) and have been in Soul Society make babies?!! Can a shinigami in a gigai have sex and make babies??? And wouldn't that mean he wouldn't have changed his looks since he had kids? Nobody would get suspicious?? I@_@

Ichigo's dad is in a gigai. Yes, you would have to die to be a shinigami. Ichigo's father was never said to be a captain. He was just said to be a "captain level shinigami" It was never stated that he served under the former 12th squad captain Urahara Kisuke either. In episode 112 of the series, Urahara asked Kurosaki Isshin how it felt after so long. This is because a shinigami's gigai restricts their powers by giving them a fully functional human body that resembles their spirit form. So yes, Death gods in a gigai can have kids. As for the changing of looks, remember, Isshin is a spirit. The gigai is not a true human body so the age won't show.

he left the soul society a long time ago and thus lost all spirit power(probably not 100% since ichigo had spirit powers but couldn't fully awaken it until rukia lend him about all of hers at the begging of the anime series bleach. For the gigai question most likely but it can't be proven. And the last question no one would got suspicious of him since he left under a good record, now it might been different if he was evil b4 leaving the soul society .

It just happened. Don't think about too much really. Let the mangaka fill onto those gaps. He just appeared as a captain level shinigami (his reatsu, sword and outfit gave it away). We only know that Urahara and him are friends, we don't know how much they know of each other or how far the frienship goes. I am guessing that Urahara gave him a gigai but not the same he gave Rukia.

Ichigo had his own shinigami powers though. this was a response to an earlier answer. i had no idea ichigo's dad was a shinigami.

well...if u know da history of bleach u'll know dat ichigo's dad is the vice captain under urahara...who was kicked out of the soul society...did it come to u dat being the vice captain under urahara dat ichigo's dat got kicked out too...and since urahara is a genius (hence he was kicked out of soul society...) dat he could've built a gigai to use in the human world...
