It depends on what you refer to as "things"...

Scientifically, matter/energy can neither be created or destroyed. They just get transformed from one state to another. So in the purest scientific sense, they DO last forever... just think about diamonds; they take thousands of years to form from plain carbon.

If you're talking about relationships... well, that's a combined effort really... and they can last a long-long time if enough effort is put in by all parties involved - not sure about forever though.

All in all, since forever isn't really something that can be observed in any of our human lifetimes, it really doesn't matter if something will really last forever. So, a human lifetime is as "forever" as any of us can observe.

True love is said to last forever (I'm keeping anything religious out of this), but according to which observer? And how long has he/she observed this?

because as time goes by, we have to let things go, and because of that, we can't have things last forever.

The Universal Law says that there is one and only one thing Permanent in Life and that is 'CHANGE. In other words,a 'change' shall manifest itself as a continuity and last for ever.For other things,the law stands.
