I love this concept, because I have no idea what my birth order is, and have characteristics of eldest child, middle child, and youngest child. Alfred Adler, who came up with the theory of birth order and personality, would have a field day with me.
I was born a year after my sister, but people treated us as twins. Then, when I was six, we adopted a 10-year-old. So, does that make me the youngest, or the middle? But then she left home, so I was the definite youngest again. However, right around that time my mother had another one, making me the middle child... but shortly my biological sister left, leaving me and the baby, therefore taking on "oldest child" responsibilities.
I'm very independent, rather dominant, and responsible. Very much a leader, even if no one wants to follow me. Rather conservative in some ways, adventurous in others. I love to listen to people and help others, but I am relatively unemotional and don't care for actual "caretaking". Most of my characteristics are "oldest" or "only child"... but I think because of my experiences, I can adapt to suit the situation.
I think the whole birth order thing is so complex, with so many variables (age, how many years apart, how many siblings total, etc.) that its value is limited. It was developed when people had one kid after the other, pretty close together, and usually had about three or four at least and that has changed so much that I question the validity of that theory in today's changing world.

I am an only child but also the youngest of two girls. My sister and I were raised as only children until the ages of 17 and 20. In both families we were the first born grandchildren and we both display characteristics of only children. The need to be alone, not good at sharing..etc..but we have overtime slipped into the traditional roles of older/younger sibling. I am very out going, neat freak, control freak.

Now that is not always true, leadership and quiet yes. Another thing you have to take into the mix, your sex male or female. I am a procrastinator and unorganized, that I depend on my sisters. You can not label each by birth order.

I am the first born and I have one younger brother. I am really pretty screwed-up but I manage to, in spite of it all, get a lot done and continue to accomplish things every day. I love to set goals for myself and complete them one by one. I am sloppy and not very good with my money. I easily piss people off and dont care much for rules. I am a pacifist (mostly) and I cant stand people with narcissistic personality traits. Hows that??

I am the second born and the middle child.
I am shy, an overacheiver, i love to win, I talk a lot when I'm around friends but hardly ever speak around people that i don't know well. Even if I goto school with them.
I love to read and am more mature for my age.

im an only child...im outgoing and fun, especially with guys...dont really enjoy the company of girls too much except for a few really close friends (that might come from a problem with sharing and competition, since as an only child i was never really exposed to either)...i do need alone time once in a while, but not too often...im not not particularily motivated or ambitious, but i was fortunate enought to be born smart, pretty and damn lucky so things usually come pretty easy to me...i love the spotlight...im kinda attention craving...

Yes, and I've also heard that if you're born later than your friends and are always the youngest in your class (i.e. I was born in August so I started school when I was four, I was always a year younger than everyone else in my class) that you are more immature and you will always be slightly behind everyone else. Not intellectually I mean, but emotionally.

i am the only child and i think sometimes a bit of a mixed bag: I definitely need alone time; I always want to share everything i have (to the point that I may be left wanting because I've given away something i need) very sarcastic, outgoing, funny, NEED to help others, i can forgive but i NEVER forget, Habitually punctual and slightly scatterbrained

I am an only child-first and last-so I'm not sure about birth order for that one, but would say I am quiet and shy.
