It's because the left part of the brain is often dominant over the right part. Which means the the left side of your brain controls the right side of your body. In people who are left handed have a dominated right side. It's base on the most dominant side of the brain which is base on the most dominant allele.

Which in most case "right handed" is dominate and "left handed" is recessive.

I'm convinced that it's because of evolution. For millions of years, and continuing right up until today, human beings scratched and wiped there *** with their hands. Since they also ate with their hands, people who used both hands for personal care must have suffered significantly more disease and reproduced less. In addition to that, the habit of being one handed or the other, has undoubtedly been socially reinforced. In my travels, I have witnessed several cultures that bind the arms of naturally left handed children, forcing them to use their right hands. In many Asian cultures it is thought to be bad luck to be left handed and they take steps to prevent it. On the bright side, it produces wonderfully ambidextrous people. Back to the bathroom. I'm just guessing, but I would bet that at least two billion people on this planet still use their hand (universally the left) to clean themselves. It could be significantly more. In a lot of the world, nothing is more offensive than eating or handling food with your left hand. They think you're a filthy animal! That leaves the right hand for almost everything else, including shaking hands, saluting, and so on and so on. The true mark of a civilization is its plumbing and toilet paper.

About 8% to 15% of the population is left-handed. There are many theories about the cause, but it is at least partly heteditary (handedness tends to run in families). The generally accepted theory is that a specific handedness confers a survival advantage in certain situations. Wikipedia has a big article on it, which covers many of the theories.

people started to become left-handed a long time ago for survival reasons or advantages.. one of the theories, believe it or not, is that it was easier for men to masturbate using two hands as a lefty.
