Sorry, it's late and my brain is on stupid mode. I'm pretty sure it is a sentence and can stand on its own, but I need someone else's opinion.

Yes, but you have to punctuate it as follows:

Then, one day in college, it hit me.

It IS DEFINITELY a sentence that stands on its own. The punctuation is like the previous answer says.

Then, one day in college, it hit me.

Check it out by the basics. It has a subject - "it"
It has a predicate (verb) - "hit"

If you had only those two words, it would be a complete sentence. The other parts are for describing the sentence more clearly.

my stupid mode agrees with your stupid mode, it is surely a complete sentence. Great minds think alike, even when it's late.

haha nope sorry your sentence is not complete. If you are writing a college paper remember the formatting guidelines...when writing you have to eliminate "it" and put what it is that you are talking about so the reader doesn't get lost.

"Then one day in college I finally realized what was missing in my life."

It's not a complete sentence, but can be used and be grammatically correct if it is a conjunction between two corresponding sentences.

Then, one day in college, it hit me.

(Just needed a couple commas)

I don't believe so...
You would have to put a comma, then put what hit you "Then one day in college it hit me, I was all on my own"
