According to the biggest researcher working on the question Happiness = Set Point + Circumstances + Voluntary Control
The set point is the genetically driven tendency for your happiness to return to a certain range. After a period of sadness, amputees return to their set point as do lottery winners. We can't control all of our circumstances and we certainly don't choose our genetic set point, but we can do have voluntary control of whether we center our lives of deeply held values or just float along with consumer society for instance. The link below describes some other voluntary activities (reflecting on what you're grateful for, matching strengths to opportunities, expressing gratitude to someone who helped you).

There are but two keys and you must have them both to be happy. They are: to be content with the moment AND to stop pursuing and instead live IN each and every moment of life. The reason so many never achieve happiness is because they are never content with the happiness they catch, always looking for more more more, the result being that life is not lived, only pursued, and one is never satisfied.

it's diffrent for everyone. if money makes you happy then your key would be an outstanding job, if it's love, then getting married/having kids would be your key...
