It would make you not so much a better person, but a much happier person because you would not be carrying around that hate and anger that it takes to make you an unkind person, being kind and giving to others even your enemies will free your heart and soul for all the good things in life for you to enjoy.
And the best part of all is if you are kind and giving to your enemies it stumps them they don't know how to take you or what to think of you and they can no longer predict your actions or what makes you angry , trust me you will feel so free when you use that energy to be happy rather than mean and unkind your whole disposition will change you will even be surprised yourself at the difference it will make in your life.
You can learn to love your friends by knowing that love is not so much measured by if it is returned equally, the joy we feel from love is how it makes us feel inside to love others. But before you can love your friends you must first love yourself truly love yourself, then loving others comes easy no matter what they say or do.

The golden rule is not about being good for the sake of others; it's about spreading some good around to make the world a better place for YOU to live in. If you sew hatred, there will be more hatred going around and multiplying, and eventually it will come back at you. If you sew love, the same is true.
The kindness of others toward you is what makes you a good person. If you are a good person, you will be kind to others, which will make them good. They will then spread more kindness. So by acting good you improve your chances of recieving goodness, and that will make you a happy person.
Also, when you do good you will feel happy immediately. Maybe the reason being good makes us happy now is that subconsciously we know we have improved our own chances of survival later.

I'm thinking here that you must be fairly young, as most of us out grow "enemies." If you are, say in Jr High or High School, just ignore the people who don't like you and whom you dislike. Next year they may be your friends. I don't know why you would have to "learn" to love your friends. If they are friends, there must be some feeling of love towards them already. Just treat everyone as if they were a potential friend and it will be a lot easier.
