i don't think so. vidic is tall and he doesn't get scored on a lot. stam was also tall and during his heydays, nobody can get pass him.

Height doesn't necessarily mean lacking of speed. Rio Ferdinand and Alessandro Nesta are tall enough, but they are not slow. Big guys tend to be slow, but it depends on the player's skills. Usually coaches choose tall defenders in as centre-backs, because they need their aerial ability. Are you aware that crossings can cause hazard in penalty box?
You mentioned Bundesliga, I don't know much about Bundesliga but I know they are not too rich like EPL, maybe they just can't afford better player. They just buy 'economy package', which just provide basic features. Slow centre-backs can compensate their lack of sped with anticipation, like John Terry.

No no no no no. Most World Class center backs are very tall and big. Speed for a center back is important but the best and experienced defenders can do without being the fastest.
That's what the offside trap is for too :).
Being bigger is better because you need to deal with physical play and headers. This is coming from a short guy (i dont play center back tho).

no no! what r u talkin about!? lol look at Stam! Nesta! Maldini! Terry! Ayala! i could go on and on! Most of the world's top defenders are tall.... i myself am 190 cm, and i am really good as a center-back! If anything height helps u get more headers and jump higher so u can clear more balls with ur head..... so If anything...tall defenders are better than the short ones!

No. I am a tall (for my age,13, 5'8) defender and I really don't think it's a matter of height. Most of the tall ppl are always slow but they only gotta work on the speed. I can beat everyone on my club just because of my long legs. So maybe tall defenders are no the best but we DO come in handy. For defenders you really only need SPEED, GOOD STRONG BODY, ACCURACY, GOOD REFLEXES , AND GOOD REACTIONS.

height is always an advantage for any central defenders. it helps them to clear air balls put in towards their penalty box. and also good for clearing corners. besides that, if their headers are good, they can get the goals for the team (examples- vidic, sanderos, terry, carvalho, sergio ramos (not that tall though), hyypia, etc.).
as for speed, of course they can be a bit slower from the strikers but they can mark pacey hitmen with their experience (closing them down early, fouling them without getting booked, etc.). u can see how rio ferdinand fool the strikers by having good dribbling skills and all.
but that's for central defenders though. i think for right backs and left backs, pace is important since they have to overlap the wingers to help get the markers away from wingers.

i think lots of defenders are tall, but still fast...and cannavaro is really athletic, and hes not that tall, so i think it just depends on the players skills and athleticism.

Ehh sometimes height has to do with it, sometimes it's agility and skill. But yeah, I'd say shorter defenders tend to do better...

It depends on the defender's skills! As long as they stop the ball the right way, it doesn't really matter how fast they are. (You gotta have tha skillz! :) )
