So that small children can't climb in, close the door and suffocate. Seriously, that's the reason.

It's an old law to prevent kids from getting trapped in old fridges. Back in the 50s, fridges had latches on them, not the magnetic type doors you have since the 60's.

Because dozens, maybe hundreds, of kids have DIED inside old, thrown out refrigerators, when they got inside and the door closed on them. Once the door closed they couldn't get out -- they suffocated. Removing the door is an EASY way to save a child's life.

Because a child could get trapped in the air tight box if left out at the curb. You don't have to take the door off, just bea the hell out of it with a sledge hammer so it can not be air tight.
