I know certain packages and evelopes may be sent through an X-Ray machine that would reveal the contents. However, do they take the time to read every letter, or actually open mail? Usually not.

If they have reasonable suspicion to suspect something illegal or hazardous, then they can and will open the mail parcel.

Other then the aforementioned, the post office usually just looks at the city/zip code and puts the mail in the proper area which will allow it to get to its' proper destination. If you have the wrong amount of postage, then the mail is sent back to you.

After it leaves the post office a mail carrier delivers it to the proper address.

Is this what you wanted to know???

They don't handle it well at all. I sent myself a package from the USA to my adress in Budpest,Hungary more than 3 month ago. I was very patient about it not arriving.I finally trcked it over the internet,it seems they are trying to deliver it in the Netherlands! I have to wait at least another 60 days while they look into it. I am afraid someone has stolen my things and they are covering it up and it will be hard to collect on the insurance that I bought. I will never use the USPS for mailing my packages again.

Once you drop it in the mail box, the letter carrier takes it back to their post office, it goes into a big mail bag or even a cart, then it goes to a sorter (automated) it may be at the same post office or to a main post office, once it is sorted (by zip code) then it goes to the proper post office for the letter carrier break it down by street (there is also the DPS letters but that is another story) the the letter carrier delivers it usually takes about 3 days give or take a day or two.

Do you have any idea how much mail they handle. There is no way that they can scrutinize everything. but there are systems in place to filter out the suspicious letters or packages.

WELL, FIRST I HOPE YOUR NOT SENDING ANYTHING BAD THROUGH THE MAIL ! THEY SCAN IT, IF THEY FEEL THERE IS SOMETHING ILLEGAL OR DANGEROUS IN A PACKAGE THEY WILL ALERT THE PROPER AUTHORITIES. THEN WHEN THEY START TO LOSE THERE MIND FROM DOING THE SAME THING DAY AFTER DAY, THEY GO POSTAL.....!
