Assuming you know for sure that it is broken, there is a technique I have used for many years as an Ortho Tech.
First you would want to buddy tape the toes together. By that, I mean you would put a small gauze or piece of tissue paper between the Great toe(the big one) and the next toe. This is so you won't have skin on skin, which would cause skin breakdown. Then you get some adhesive cloth tape,1/2" width. If you only have 1" tape, just split it down to make it 1/2" width. Starting at the base of the great toe, tape the great toe to the next toe. Then do the same thing at the end of the Great toe with the tape and capture the next toe so that the 2 toes are "buddied up" to each other. Don't tape it too tight because you don't want to compromise circulation. You are merely taping the fractured toe to the next toe to give it stability. The next thing I would do is wear a hard sole shoe, such as a post-op shoe. This takes the pressure off a specific area and allows the metatarsals(the bones just below the toes) to spread out. These techniques are pretty much the industry standard, but the bottom line is to have a Orthopedic MD look at it first to get a proper diagnosis. Not to bag on Podiatrists, but I would avoid them in this case. (they like to do surgery). I guess I did bag on the Podiatrists, Sorry out there.
Good Luck, Rick

I don't think there is anything they can do for a broken toe. I think you just have to let it heal on it's own. Take some pain relievers for pain and maybe put some ice on it.
