How long should I plan on spending driving the 375 miles from LA airport to Yosemite National Park? I've heard about 7 1/2 hours. Any locals have a better estimate? This would be in early August, leaving LAX mid-day. Also any suggestions for sights to see in California? Thanks!

About 7 hours is right, I doubt it will be much less. Depends on how long it takes you to get out of LA, that can cost you about a half an hour depending on traffic. Once you get past the 405/5 interchange it's pretty much clear sailing till Fresno. When you get off the freeway and on to the road to Yosemite you can't go real fast so your travel time gets locked in.
You might think about heading to San Francisco afterward, it' a great city to visit and not too far away. Besides visiting the city, go to Muir Woods National Park just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. It's a nice California Redwood grove and park. Head back down to LA by way of the coast highway. Do so by taking hwy 14 out of San Jose to Santa Cruz. You can visit Santa Cruz and see the only real boardwalk on the west coast, it includes three national monuments. Head down the coast highway to Monterey and visit the worlds best aquarium. Keep going to LA stopping in Carmel, San Simeon (Hurst Castle), San Luis Obispo (great college town), Solvang (recreated Dutch town where they filmed the movie "Sideways"), and Santa Barbara. The coast highway is considered one of the great drives in the United States.

Hi,
You don't say how long you have, so if it's a short trip, then you could take Highway 5 & 99 to get to Yosemite in less than 6 hours, but personally, I think you'd be missing out on a lot of California's other great attractions.
If you have more time tho, get to Yosemite the fast way, then head west & work your way south back to Los Angeles along the coastline. I agree with Just A Friend to head over to San Francisco on the way back (less than 4 hours drive), then enjoy stopping at different cities south of that. You'd be traveling in a loop, giving yourself a chance to enjoy the scenic coastal roads.
I'd throw in Big Sur too if you have the time...it's my favorite coastline drive. Monterey/Carmel is pretty cool too.
