I am expecting my second baby in October, and already my areola are huge. There's no way a lil tiny baby mouth is going to be able to fit that in his/her mouth.

The nipple size seems ok now. However, with my first baby, I was told that my nipples are too short and that's why I was not succesful at breastfeeding. Looks like this time the nipple problem has been solved.

But I am wondering about the areola...

hi i too developed very large areolas. I am still successufully breast feeding my 10 month old baby girl. The areola has nothing to do with breast feeding. Mine are so large my husband cant even get them lol as long as the nipple goes in the month and latches on properply no probs. My daughter just has a small amount of areola in mouth but as long as she has a mouth ful and is latching on properly it shall be a success. Good luck

Large Areola Breastfeeding

You should be fine. The baby might have some trouble latching on at first but most babies do. Just make sure that your baby has at least part of the areola in his/her mouth. If they're sucking on just the nipple, that could lead to cracking, possibly bleeding, and pain for you.

It'll probably be fine... the areola is just the dark part around the nipple and from what I was told, that's what helps the baby zero in on the "target"--your nipple. It doesn't have to all fit inside the mouth--just the nipple. Don't worry so much and I hope you have better luck with nursing this time (it's really worth it!) :)

The baby doesn't need to fit the whole areola in his/her mouth to breast feed. So don't worry too much about them being huge. As long as the child can get the nipple (the protruding part of the breast) in to it's mouth, it's fine.

The areola shouldn't be a problem The baby doesn't have to get the whole of it into it's mouth.

Don't worry. Your baby will take into his or her mouth just the right amount of the areola that your baby will need. Women have been nursing for thousands of years before the invention of the bottle; and yes they came in all shapes and sizes.

Don't worry if the entire areola doesn't fit in the baby's mouth. Mine never did and I was able to breastfeed all 5 of my babies.

Don't worry. My areola covers 1/2 my breast. No kidding... Baby doesn't have to fit the whole thing in his/her mouth. Just enough to stimulate the milk ducts.

I have successfully breastfed 4 kids.

That will have no affect on your babys breastfeeding. Mine were large too and my little girl latched on just fine. They want the nipple..not the whole breast. Don't worry, it'll all be ok. Good luck.
