let x be the number

two more than the number, tells you : x + 2

multiply by 2
(x + 2) * 2

equals 14

(x + 2) * 2 = 14

x + 2 = 7

x = 5

so the number is 5

apparently, this isn't a math question but an english question.

rather than try to make the math make sense, try making the english make sense. in english, sense is modified by punctuation, in arithmetic, by the operational signs.

two more than (a number when multiplied by two equals 14) can be translated into mathematical notation as:

2 + (x * 2 = 14)

which would make x = 6

While that expression is true, it is also quite different from

(two more than a number) when multiplied by two equals 14,
which can be translated into mathematical notation as:

(2+x) * 2 = 14

which would make x = 5

On the other hand,

two more than (the) number when multiplied by two equals 14

which can be written as (x + 2) when x * 2 = 14

which would make x equal to 9.

I'm not sure whether the author of this question should be shot or turned into a national hero. Probably the mischevious child of a math teacher and an english sub.

Or are you just makin' trouble?

Let x = the number
Then x+2 is 2 more than the number
2(x+2) is twice the previous expression
2(x+2) = 14
2x+4 = 14
2x = 10
x= 5

translation tip:

"Two more than a number" means (number + 2)
"when multiplied by two " means * 2
"equals fourteen" means = 14

so,
"Two more than a number when multiplied by two equals fourteen" means
"(Two more than a number) (when multiplied by two) (equals fourteen)" means

(number + 2) * 2 = 14
2 * number + 4 = 14
2 * number = 10
so number = 10/2 = 5

9

14 = (x-2) * 2

9 is two more than 7 which when multiplied by 2 = 14.

Usualy a question like this is asking you to set up a formula, and then i dentify the variable. You should set it up like this 2(x+2)=14.
By distribution you would then get 2x+4=14, then subtract 4 from both sides to get 2x=10, then divide both sides by 2 to get x = 5. Btw, x is 'the number'

2x+ 2 = 14
2x = 12
x = 6

or
2(x+2)=14
2x +4 = 14
2x = 10
x=5

The wording is a little weird. You may want to check it. If when = then, then the bottom one would apply for sure.

you make the equation, which is derived from the problem, and solve for x
2(x+2)=14
x=5
I hope this helped.
