we don;t know, since there has never been a study on human subjects. Its likely that a galss of wine a day is not going to hurt the baby, but if she's binge drinking it may be harmful. She needs to get help, take her to AA.

The average advised amount to drink for any pregnant woman is one glass of wine a day. However, most women prefer not to drink at all during pregnancy.

It's not known exactly how much alcohol a single person would need to drink before a baby is hurt by it as everyone is different.

But, the damage that can be caused to the baby is mostly concerning its mental development.

You MUST get your friend to stop drinking so much somehow. Tell her that if she won't listen to you then she needs to hear it from someone who DOES know what exactly what they're talking about, and urge her to make an appointment with her midwife. What a silly girl your friend is-she needs to see how lucky she is to have a friend who cares about her and her baby the way you do!

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Also called: FAS
If you are pregnant and drink alcohol, so does your baby. This can hurt your baby's growth and cause life-long physical and behavioral problems. One of the most severe effects of drinking during pregnancy is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). FAS is a group of problems that can include

Mental retardation
Birth defects
Abnormal facial features
Growth problems
Problems with the central nervous system
Trouble remembering and/or learning
Vision or hearing problems
Behavior problems
FAS lasts for a lifetime. There is no cure. Special school services can help with learning problems. Routines and consistency at home may help with behavior problems. Women can prevent FAS and other problems related to alcohol use by not drinking when they are pregnant or might get pregnant.

I used to drink and stopped because the smell of alcohol during my pregnancy made me sick to my stomach. No amount of alcohol is good. Would any responsible adult give there child even a sip of alcohol? I don't think so. I have a friend with fetal alcohol syndrome. She was adopted because her mother drank and the baby was actually taken from her mother when she was at the hospital. I would try and talk to your friend but no guarantee that she'll stop drinking.

No studies have been done to determine how much is dangerous but none is recommended.

Any amount of alcohol can hurt the baby, during the first trimester especially. Half a bottle is not a little bit. Get your friend some help.

Any amount of alcohol will hurt the baby!if you are pregnant and take a drink -- a glass of wine, a beer or a cocktail -- your unborn child takes the same drink. Whatever you eat or drink while pregnant goes directly through your bloodstream into the placenta.

If you're having a drink, baby is too.

For the unborn child, the alcohol interferes with his ability to get enough oxygen and nourishment for normal cell development in the brain and other body organs.

This is a hugely debated thing in my family. I got into all kinds of trouble with my brother-in-law when I had ONE glass of wine with Thanksgiving dinner last year when I was pregnant. I couldn't understand why everyone was getting so upset! It was just one glass of wine, and with a lot of food.

My personal opinion is that one glass won't hurt. Women have been doing that throughout history and it's not like we have a population full of people with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. I have had an occasional glass of wine throughout all 4 of my pregnancies and seemingly without any consequence. Give your friend a break. But half the bottle?? That's a bit much.

IMO you shouldn't drink any, but if she must 1 glass of wine a day is okay. As for hard liqueur she should stay away from it unless she wants something to go wrong with her baby.
