My husband and I have been TTC for over a year now. We're seeing my ob/gyn doctor, who also specializes in fertility. However, when should we start to see a reproductive endocrinologit? Will we get better results with a RE instead? Any advise would help. Thank you.

Okay I say absolutely go to an RE sure it's kind of what OB's do but not really. My OB could have gave me the same test and treatment that my RE did but after TTC for a year I'm 24 years old he never thought to even run tests or anything. I went to a RE and got preg. 2 weeks later I'm 18 weeks now and the rest is history. RE's don't really deal w/ prenatal care so you will be sent back to your OB when you do get preg. I want back to my OB @ 7 weeks preg. Would you go to a RE for him/her to deliver your baby. Probably not right (though they probably could) so why go to an OB for fertility treatments they are similar in that they deal with women's health but that's really it Fertility is a separate discipline altogether. It's taken you a year of TTC to seek help don't waste any more of your time seeking help in the wrong places. Who knows in another month you could be preg. I happened for me I'm not that spacial! Good luck hope I helped.
PS. Most insurance will cover RE's vists minus co-pay and labs and testing and pharmacy drugs and U/S as long as it's done in the office. If they will cover your OB to do it they will cover your RE. insurance does not cover one doc. and not another they are all seen a specialist.

My experience was.... My Ob/Gyn referred me to an RE.... but my OB/Gyn was not a specialist either.

My husband and I had been trying (not using protection but not necessarily timing intercourse or predicting ovulation) for SEVEN years before I got serious about conceiving. So, my Ob/Gyn at the time knew that I wasn't a "simple case" and referred me right away after some basic tests (HSG, ultrasounds, etc.) to the RE.

I started seeing the RE in October of 2002. In November 2002 he performed a laproscopic surgery to check for abnormalities, blockages, endometriosis, etc.... I was found to be "all clear" and I was started on Clomid coupled with at-home injections of HCG to force ovulation. I was *very* closely monitored by my RE with monthly visits for transvaginal ultrasounds to check follicle size after taking the Clomid and advice on when (or if) to take the HCG injection that month.....

I conceived in March of 2003 after my third round of Clomid/HCG. She was born December of 2003 - a happy, healthy baby girl! :)

I LOVED the up-close and personal care I received from my RE. He really knew his stuff - I saw him at Yale University and he was at the top of his field - I was very lucky to be living in Connecticut at the time!

I really would recommend the RE - especially if it's been over a year since you've been TTC. Will your insurance cover it and will your Ob/Gyn give you the referral? The referral is usually necessary by most insurance providers.... If so, I say go for it! Have you tried or began to discuss fertility meds yet? I would definitely try the meds before doing something like IVF - which my RE actually mentioned jumping righ to IVF with me! I was glad I said no, that I wanted to try the meds (Clomid) first.....!

Best of luck....!

you could try...an RE has the same knowledge as your OB/GYN has access to...is there anything your OB/GYN has not tried?
Will your insurance cover a consult with an RE. they can be quite expensive and the testing that they use can be very expensive as well....

an RE will be able to tell you why you are not concieving and what you need to do, a ob will just give you advice. See the RE.
