My best friend has a baby that is 15months old but she was born 6wks early, my daughter is 10 months old and they are about the same level developmentally. So I was just wondering if it was because her daughter was early or if my daughter was a little bit ahead? My daughters doctor did tell me that she is advanced on some areas. Thank you!!

When you look at a preemie's development you measure it allowing for the prematurity. In other words, a 6 month old who was 2 months early would be expected to function at 4 months. If there is no damage from the prematurity the differences usually disappear. Remember that that there is a pretty wide range in what is considered "normal" for babies. I wouldn't worry about your friend's baby.

Most premies are behind by the amount of time they are premature. So in this case, 6 weeks. The gape usually closes about the time the premie has reached 24 months.

This could be due to your daughter being developmentally advanced.

If they baby was 6 wks early, you could say they would be roughly 6 wks behind in most baby milestones. Although this isn't always true, and it differs from baby to baby, as each baby will met milestones at their own time regardless of age or pre-maturity.

Your daughter wouldn't be ahead of any other baby, and it doesn't make them smarter if they can sit up earlier than another child. Try not to compare children with other children, but with themselves instead.

Pre-mature children catch up very quickly and you might start to feel as though you advanced child is slowing down a lot compared to this preemie who is flying ahead. Never compare.

A baby is usually as far behind as they were early. So a 6-wk preemie would be 6 wks behind. Most of the delay disappears by age 2. I imagine your daughter is just a bit ahead.

preemie are generally "behind" the same amount as they were early, but they usually catch up by 2 yrs. Your daughter may be advanced, her's may be a little slower to develop, but 6 weeks is not too early, and she likely will not have any lasting effects
