I was listening to the Republican Senator from Oklahoma on C-Span after the Immigration vote. He said the message from the American people was crystal clear on Immigration. First, concentrate on enforcing existing laws and border security, then move on to the undocumented worker problem. That sounds great. But, my question is... Why didn't the Republicans FIX the border security problem while they had total control for 6 years? It seems that 9/11 mandated tighter border security - but they waited until the Democrats had power to all of a sudden act on it.

Mel - No, I can't just say thanks. When Republican senators say the message is clear? Well, it was also clear after 9/11 when they had total control of the gov't. It's a very legitimate question.

LeAnne, I agree. It was a good outcome for a change.

I am a conservative and we have been yelling for 6-7 years. Republicans did not get this "deal" stopped. We all did. Both sides of the isle got the message straight from the people.

I have to wonder where you have been over the last 7 years not to have heard both conservatives and liberals continually bringing up that subject.

Republican congress has let us down, big time. The border should have been secured years ago. Actually, long before 9/11. That means both parties failed us.

What we MUST do now, is to stay connected with what is going on in congress and Washington in general. Speak up. Just as we did with this bill. The Internet allows us to stay informed. Talk radio -conservative and liberal- points out issues as well.(It is up to us to investigate and come to our personal opinion.)

Most of us have wondered how ridiculous laws could have been passed by congress. For the most part, we were too busy making a living and there was little available information. This bill would have passed had we not been as informed.

We just learned, as a country, that we can get the info and we can make ourselves heard. This may well have been the first time "We the people" forced our congressmen to do as WE want. Shall we stay plugged in? Please? We, the people, can overhaul our government and take it back.

"Why didn't the Republicans FIX the border security problem while they had total control for 6 years"

Simple. Because the party leaders feared losing the Hispanic vote.

Now we have shown them that the American people will not stand for this type of pandering, and indeed we will send them packing on election day if amnesty is passed

Forget the republicans and democrats for a moment - the defeat of this bill was a bipartisan effort by the American people. Period.
Power to the people - democracy is still alive and well in America.

As stated before...

It is a sad day when Americans (myself included) have to celebrate the US government for not doing something that was so blatantly bad for US citizens.

That's like celebrating the times an abusive parent doesn't strike you. Is it not amazing how today's voting age citizen's have lowered their expectations of this government.

Are not the borders STILL wide open???

Yippeee! My power-abusive government did not abuse me today. Wow, we dodged that bullet... Lets give them a raise for doing the obviously right thing. How about it?

Republican or Democrat, Congress never does anything until they feel the American public is fed up enough to send them packing if they don't deal with it.

When is the last time you thanked your Democratic Senate or Congress?

If Harry and Nancy would of bullied their way through this time... it would of been bad for America, just like the majority of their idea's.

Nice try. The Republicans tried. And there was not and still is not consensus regarding the illegal immigration problem.

I'm giving them credit for defeating this bill. They've earned it.

oh you still think either republican nor democrat really wants to, you have high hopes my friend. The political spin it will produce will be quite entertaining.

it's pretty clear... "Joe Blow Republican" wants immigration reform...

BUT, "Joe Big Business Owner Republican" LOVES illegals since they work for pennies on the dollar and tax free... making him BILLIONS...

So, Republican lawmakers tell average Joe "hey we want to get them"....

and then tell big business "don't worry, we're just keeping the average folks happy. you'll still get your labor and KEEP THE DONATIONS COMING!"

say one thing... do another... follow the money

today they just kept the "status quo"...

Maybe it's because they weren't worried about their jobs! They haven't done anything about fixing it yet. We'll have to keep the pressure on until we see it.
