Two options here, Bad sending unit in the tank (Most likely cause) or a bad gauge. Your gauge in the dash works of the resistance that is sent from the sending unit in the tank. If the gauge seems to be responding ok (No fast movements or other erratic behavior, and simply moves in a normal fashion) then your sending unit needs to be replaced. You should be able to get a replacement from the dealer or any auto parts store.

Sounds like your fuel gage isn't registering properly in the tank. The only way I know around it is to keep track of how many miles you go and at each fill up keep track of how many miles you get per gallon in proportion to how many miles you go. I didn't explain that very well did I? sorry..

In my Professional opinion - I'm guessing the guage is broken! But, I could be wrong! Or, the guage is correct and YOU are driving back and forth!
