On red lights, I tend to hold the clutch down and sometimes press the gas to go forward a little and hold the clutch down again. I do that because I just want to get a head start because I think my car is really slow! Any advice?

Please let the clutch out slowly along with the gas, until you know the answer to this question.

It sounds like your car is slow because you are holding the clutch down while trying to accelerate. You will burn through your clutch in no time. Try to think of making an even exchange between clutch and gas. Releasing the clutch will start to move your car forward. Once you have that movement, begin to add gas and release the clutch.
