Poor little bugger. It sounds pretty mean, but I think he should probably be euthanised. Call up a vet and ask - they will give you the proper advice.

Awwww. poor little thing. kids are so hard on these little pets. I would take it to the vet tomorrow and have it put down humanely. I am so sorry. That's sad. It is just a little life, but still a life.

Don't let the kids play with him. Keep him warm and make sure he doesn't run out of food and water. The fact that he's still moving around is a good sign. Try to keep him in a quiet, calm place.

Don't go taking it to the vet unless you're rich. That's ridiculous. If you need to put it out of it's misery, you can put it in a paper lunch bag and put it in the freezer. That's what they do at Petco.

I don't know how you expect him to tell you that he is in pain. However if he was stepped on and is dragging his legs a broken back and a short life span with constant misery is what he is facing. Unfortunately he needs to be euthanized.

I assume that there's nothing you can do. The most likely thing is that nature will take it's course and your gerbil will die.
