A lot of responders suggested it might be carpal tunnel. Yes, I agree, it could be that due to your symptoms, but it could also be a scaphoid fracture. You are describing pretty much the same symptoms as a scaphoid fracture. So, at this point, you need to evaluate your history prior to your symptoms. If you were doing a lot of repetitive motion in the hands, computer keyboard, grocery checking, that sort of thing, I would think it might be carpal tunnel. However, If you can recall some specific time recently that you injured that area, like falling on outstretched hand or some sort of specific trauma to that area, I would lean more on Scaphoid Fx. Scaphoid fractures very often don't show up on an x-ray, so a MRI would be needed. They are also slow healing due to the poor blood supply in the scaphoid. The only way to know for sure is to see an Otho Doc and let him examine it. They also have a specific test to check for carpal tunnel that is done by palpatating the wrist. But get it checked, for sure by an ortho MD. It's hard to say which would be the worst to have. Carpal tunnell is fixed by rest and bracing, but usually requires a simple surgery, Schapoid fractures usually don,t need surgery, (in some cases they do). They are mostly treated in a thumb spica cast for about 2-3 months.
A lot of people will give you answers based on their own personal experience or a friends experience, and some people who answer are clueless, maybe even me. Most answers are well intentioned, but really, go to the pros who see this kind of thing several times a day, every day for years.
Who are you gonna trust? I would love to hear what your diagnosis is, so try and post it somehow. Good luck, Rick

Have you asked the coach? If it is OK. How about putting Athletic Tape on your wrists. Don't put it on to tight. When you put the tape on hold your hand out and spread your fingers slightly and that will keep you from getting the tape to tight. Let about half an inch of the tape go onto your hand [the part of the wrist that bends] This helps with shock and supports your wrist some in case you hit the ball wrong. The ice pack will help prevent swelling. It will heal faster if it doesn't swell. If you do take Aleve [Naproxen Sodium]for inflammation. Follow the directions. One tablet with one cup of water.[12 hour tablets] Best to have food in your stomach too. Do not take these for a long time. They can hurt your stomach and other things. Hope this helps.

That is an area that it related to various parts of your neck. There is a very central and important motor trigger point and even if your were not doing anything to strain that area, it may be activated by a problem in the cervical area of your neck.
However a local spasm may have caused it, a sudden shortening of the muscle or irritation of the main nerve which in turn controls the ligament/muscles in that local area. It works in reffered pain to the neck and/or from the neck.
Seeing a proffessional is advisable if it gives you a lot of pain, resting it and placing a heat pad on it may give you some immediate relief.
Chinese acupuncture may help, or Chinese acupressure. Meanwhile do not use it with your computer, for this could be one stimulant you want to avoid.
Wrap it in a heated wheat bag and massage the tight muscle or nerve point slightly with some oil until you see either a physio, or someone I suggested above.
It is a very common area to bring that problem.
Avoid using your computer for a while if you can. Both the neck, shoulders as well as the hands suffer. It is the same nerves that supply the muscles that are affected through overuse.

Do you use a wrist pad when working on the computer (both in front of the keyboard AND in front of the mouse?).
I'm not a doctor, but working on a computer does expose one to the risk of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
You should see a doctor if the pain persists. Often, the problem can be resolved by wearing a wrist brace.

I am a doctor and with those symptoms I can confidently diagnose you with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome F, a fatal version of this syndrome, I'm afraid you only have 7 days to live. I'm very sorry, give your family my deepest sympathies.
