This is definitely the mosy common question asked in this forum.
Here is what the experts say :
(Download EASY CLEANER at http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm
This is the famous FREE cleaner from Finland.
Read the instructions so you can Press UNECESSARY and then Press FIND.
Wait for this to clean out dozens and dozens of clutter that is slowing down your PC
Now click on REGISTRY and do the same, hitting FIND
Wait a minute and lots of stuff will come up. When it shows colour and a choice of SELECT ALL and DELETE ALL it is OK to delete all items.
Try out some of the other choices on Easy Cleaner as well.
Now read up on STARTUP and get to know which items are ABSOLUTELY needed on startup. Very few are by the way. Some say only SYSTRAY and a couple of others.
Now make sure you know how to defrag and do it every Sunday morning.
Now do an error checking by hitting start, my computer, then right click C, hit properties, then TOOLS and then error checking. This will clean out dozens of things that are slowing your PC down.
Well, that's a start. Regular maintenance and cleaning is the key to keeping your speed up.
Good luck.

A few things you can do to speed up your computer are as follows:
1. Run windows update by clicking on "tools" in the upper left corner of your display and choose "windows update"
2. Delete your browsing history, these are temporary Internet files your computer stores on your computer's hard drive. Do this by clicking on "tools" then "Internet options" go to browsing history and click on "delete"
3. Click "start" then "all programs" then "accessories" then "system tools" and choose "disk defragmenter" this will rearrange files on your hard drive so they can be accessed faster, which in turn will speed up your computer.
4. Check to see if you have the latest Drivers installed.
You should notice an increase in speed by simply deleting your browsing history, but if it doesn't...try the other 3 steps mentioned. Good luck, hope this information is helpful to you.

There are a few things here. Spyware and viruses can cause slowness on PCs via the Internet. That is one. Next is memory. If your lacking RAM your hard drive may be overworked.
Windows XP 512 meg RAM is good 1024 is better
Windows Vista 1024 is good 2048 is better.
tools I recommend for spyware are Adaware and Spybot both are available from www.download.com.
One other item is to minimize things running in the background. Things like chats, IM, weather, auto screen shots.

You have to get rid of the spyware and adware. I'd also recommend not using Internet Explorer. Since MS is the biggest target, that's what the exploits are written for. Also uninstall any software that you don't use. Best advice would be to wipe it and start from scratch, but don't install anything that you don't use.

Make sure it is completely free of Spyware/Viruses before you do anything else. that might fix it right there. if it's still slow, you might want to consider getting more RAM. you can't go wrong with that. If it really bugs you, go get a new computer. you might also practice better habits- things like don't run a thousand programs at once.

Empty you temporary folder and delete your cookies.
Excessive amount of files in these folders can surprisingly slow down a computer greatly.
