After the explosion in the beginning, and after Detective Doug Carlin investigates Claire Kuchever's apartment, when he is in the base with the other detectives looking through the Snow White machine, he gets a call from the ATF team saying that he left his fingerprints all over the apartment when he really didn't. Now how is this possible? The girl had already been murdered by Carroll Oerstadt in that present, so even if he had gone back to the past he didn't save the girl in that present. But in that present there is still the phone call, the ambulance, the blood and tape all over the apartment the girl used to clean the gundshot wound. It just doesn't make since how the girl was dead in his present when it seems all he did in the future to save her happened. Wow, i'm confused. It doesn't make since.

This will be confusing any way you look at it, and I personally thought there were a lot of unexplained points in the movie, but I think they are aiming for he was in a time loop. Therefore, although he didn't think he had been there before, he really had been. He just hadn't entered the time loop in the present yet that would eventually take him into the path. He's basically into two alternate worlds sort of.

While the movie leaves out a lot of information, it's one of those movies you have to sit and really watch or you'll miss something.
If you watched the full movie (which you didn't say if you did or not), you'll catch on that this is really a movie about time travel. Everything he was doing was in his "present", however the snow white machine, as it was explained, was a video of the past, four days behind actually. This gave him time to "travel" back in time to right what went wrong, and save the girl. It's really complicated and something that may actually take a few times of watching to understand. Don't worry, I had to have the husband stop the movie a few times and explain what was going on to me until I figured everything out.

He went back and saved her thus changing the outcome of what happened and making all the things that happen at first happen like the phone call that she picks up at the house.. Because he changed it its like her death never happened at all....
