Some of MKULTRA's activities were also detailed in a 1963 internal report from the CIA's inspector general. This acknowledged that "concepts involved in manipulating human behavior are found by many people both within and outside the Agency to be distasteful and unethical" and warned that "some MKULTRA activities raise questions of legality". But the details didn't become public until the late 1970s. So I was surprised not to see more on the programme in the "family jewels". Perhaps CIA staff didn't think that forcing mind-altering drugs onto unwitting citizens was a big deal. There was a lot of it going on in the 1960s, after all.
Still, the few references to drug testing in the newly-released documents make chilling reading. Go to page 416, and you will learn of a behavioural drug screened as part of "larger programme, in which the Agency had relations with commercial drug manufacturers, whereby they passed on drugs rejected

because of unfavorable side effects". Drugs deemed interesting were later tested on "volunteer members of the Armed forces". The programme was apparently considered "defensive, in the sense that we would recognize certain behavior if similar materials were used against Americans".

It's the complicity of the pharmaceutical industry, passing on drugs known to be harmful, that I find most disturbing. Any ex-spooks or pharma executives care to comment?

Here is an agency with a horrid past of human rights abuse that clearly has no respect for life or the law
They have admited to torutreing people now - today - Water boarding etc
They have also been absolved from criminal prosecution for war crimes and other crimes against humanity
Does this agency have the right to exist ?
Should it be disbanded ?
Should the directors or other in the agency face prosecution ?

I think we need the CIA but it does need a complete overhauling and a lot of the criminals in there need to be put in jail for a long time too. Home land security needs to be closed and a bunch of them need prosecuting. We do need the intelligence departments but they need to be closely supervised and not allowed to become a bunch of rogues like we have now, But Little Hitler is the man that allowed a lot of this to happen.

I think they have little oversight and need far more. But they are used by presidents as assassins, to overthrow governments, to launder money!
I think their mission should be intelligence gathering rather than overthrowing governments and getting oil for large companies. Perhaps then they could do a better job!
And as far as the drug companies. It isn't even close to the first time they used the military as Ginni pigs. Thy say they volunteer! People in the military have few constitutional rights and if you have some Col. in your face, it is not likely that you will not volunteer!
I am sure those in the army that lined perimeters of nuclear test sites were given a choice, and many died of cancer with the government claiming no responsibility! As they have for many other things!
ALL of us know those sitting around in tanks with depleted uranium shells, or where they have been fired, are probably going to have a very good chance of dying from cancer caused by radiation. They constantly emit radiation! It has already started! You can guess what the American people and the governments response is going to be, We heard it for 40 years with Agent Orange and Blue!
We need intelligence gathering. Where I have issues when it goes into destabilizing governments, used as assassins and made to torture people!
Perhaps their scope should be much more narrowly defined with some oversight by those who are not politicians or in government!
There is a saying that if you are given an order and it breaks the law, that you are also responsible. There is so much power being placed on these people, however if they know they are breaking the law, then they should not carry it out. If enough did that perhaps it would not be an issue. But they do know, and do it anyway thinking the government will protect them. That's a laugh! They are certainly smart enough, but I suspect some of threats they get are they will be charged with treason or some other offense! You are really caught between a rock and a hard place!
And then to have the president give you up because they are pissed at your husband. Bush shoulf be standing in front of a firing squad, along with Cheney! They know better!
And for them to stand their at a news conferencew and state that it happened years ago to me is offensive and a lie.
They were torturing people up to a few months ago, and the CIA director admitted to Congress that there were many instances of the CIA illegally going after US citizens, and they were going to clean up their act just last month!

The new Bush Gestapo CIA should be dis-banned. Their wasn't anything wrong with the way it was being run before Bush took over. He just wanted to use 9/11 to impose his complete executive authority without repercussions of the Constitution. A Bush loop hole he exploited to the maximum. Power corrupts when used by evil minds.

Yes, get rid of them and start over. Don't rehire any of them.
The history of coups and assasinations, millions of lives lost because of thier interference.
Look at the trouble in Palestine right now. Your tax dolars paid for the overthrow of the elected government.

No, that would be stupid.
If you don't have good intel you suck. The CIA has kept America pretty safe over the years, you can't stop everything.
I wish we had intel more like Israel's. They know everything about everyone.

So you want to disband the CIA, for something they did 40 years ago ?
That doesn't make much sense.
