This was asked earlier on another forum. Not an original question apparently, but true?
Friends told me how grandkids changed them. Now that I'm a gramma, I believe it. What is it about being a grandparent that makes it ok to get older?

to me, it's been a second chance to love a child, patiently. to realize they are so tender and sweet and innocent; something as a busy parent we sometimes take for granted.

It was always okay to get older...in fact I take it as my affirmation that I am living my life right!

I could have chosen to become a drug addict, or a panhandler, or an alcoholic--each of which would have earned me an early death.

I could have chosen to commit suicide from the depressive state I was in following the break-up of my 16 1/2 year marriage.

But I didn't do those things, so now I am a grandmother. In charge (I might add) of my three grandsons daily. We live in a multigenerational household, and I get more time with them than their parents.

What I enjoy most is picking out the habits and personality traits that they got from their moms. I see my own kids in their kids, and that is a pleasure. Mind you, most of the time it is the BAD traits that are showing themselves. But I still smile over them.

The one thing I can not stand, and I get very mad about, is when they pick on each other, bullying and putting the other down. I stop it immediately, every time, and make them recite their rules...

"If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."
"Keep you hands to yourself."
"YOU are responsible for your own decisions, and the consequences those decisions earn."

And I insist on no rolled eyes while reciting, either. I figure that the lessons will eventually sink in.

I have no grandchildren, yet, but I love kids and manage to interact with as many as I can when I go into town to do my errands. It's amazing how much pleasure one can get from making a baby smile, or a young child giggle.
Raising my children was challenging, as all parents will attest.
But the rewards far outweighed the sacrifices...however I did see a bumper sticker many years ago which has stuck with me___ Live Long Enough to Seek Revenge Upon Your Children. It still makes me laugh.

Yes grandchildren is God's best reward to mankind. They say that you love more your grandchildren rather than your children. You can give the best to your grandchildren, they make you happy and look young not old although your already a grandparent

Congrats, I myself am looking forward to being a Grandparent at some point, I think what will make being a Grandparent so great, is that you have the time to spend, your career is mostly over, you are stable not struggling financially, I have always thought, why can't we work hard after we raise our kids, but I guess it is all in growth, your kids have to see you go through everything to get through it themselves. Have Fun!

i like this quesiton. My son is only 8 years previous. have not have been given any grandchildren, yet my dad consistently says. "I want i'm going to have skipped being a dad and went directly to being a grandpa"

I see it as a 2nd chance with more time and "wisdom" to do what you wish you could've done right w/ your own children. I am not a grandmother (my kiddo's are 7 and 9) but I think back to all the things I wish I would've done different and am storing them in my "grammy" bank for when I hopefully have grandchildren...I can't wait...it is a reward and one I def. look forward to;)

Yes. Grandchildren are definitely the reward.

They keep you young, (at least me)

All fun and none of the responsibility.

I didn't have to have a grandchild to make it okay to get older, it was just unavoidable and the alternative to getting older really sucks. I love my Granddaughter to death, but I am still pretty young at heart, so being a grandma is a bonus.
