Out of the three you've picked, I would select either the HP or the Sony. However, I'm quite a big fan of Fujitsu's laptops.

It also depends on your needs:
are you looking for a desktop replacement? if so, HP
are you looking for the "lightest"? if so, Sony
longest battery life? depends on the system, but remember that Sony had the battery recall.

All in all, either HP or Sony will be fine. As everyone else has also suggested, Dell systems have dropped in their reliability (and I used to only buy Dell's due to their performance and quality). Also, you can never go wrong with an IBM system (now called Lenovo - still very high quality).

If u want customer service... then DO NOT chose sony. Everybody who actually owns a sony notebook knows they have the worst customer imaginable. They ranked lowest in a recent pcworld poll for quality of customer service. Sure, they make good notebooks, (overpriced), but when u run into issues, driver problems, they will not support u without alot of hassles. Dell is slightly better (at least their reps know their own products), and hp is prob the best. Honestly though, get a ibm/ lenovo, great build, great service, very dependable and fast. And no, sony isn't "faster" or anything special, every notebook depends on its components for its performance. (and components are universal)

I have never used an hp and no one i know in my class has one (my graduating class majoring in computer science)

Dell is much cheaper then Sony for a comparable computer because you are paying for the name. If you are not going to do any hard core gaming or video making then you should be fine with a dell. Even so, hard core gamers can now get a dell xps.

You should choose an HP because Dell is horrible and Sony doesn't make good computers either.

A Tie between HP and Sony only because Dell is too unreliable. My Roommate had her computer sent into Dell to be repaired. They returned it claiming that it was. And (( it wasn't )) Problem was that she kept getting the blue screen of death. Because of it being under warrenty. They're returning the laptop itself for a new one. That has yet to arrive. Hope the info helps.

It used to be HP but the new Dells are a very attractive buy in a magnesium case and with all the options at a decent price. I like HP because you can shop them at a brick and mortars store. Both are top values and sellers.

Id probably go with the sony. They have good battery life and they are portable. Ive had one before and it was quite durable. The speeds of the sony are pretty good too
