The amazing thing about your thinking, Rena, is that it is what it is. There is a spark of originality, which makes your mind interesting to me. You see, because to "grow" is to learn. But to "pay" is back again to the Chinese Box within a box I told you about earlier. Word to the wise: life is not cruel least we allow it to be. It's "how" we tend to think of things that is the lynch pin of discovery, Rena.

Rena, my special friend, life has no laws in the way you state this, that it's cruel. There are what we call "laws of nature," but even these aren't laws, they're natural consequences of nature & even they aren't totally predictable. Humans make laws. Humans can be cruel to others, but this doesn't mean that "life" is cruel. I'm sorry, I don't understand the last part even if accepted the first premise. Say, if the laws of life are cruel--how do we "grow"or pay more for remaining the same? If "growing" could avoid this law, then it couldn't be a law at all??? I wish you'd email me & explain, for I feel a bit dense about this part....

Edit: Looking now at the answers--I very much like guru, EJ & Bob G. They make some very good points. (It's sad that someone thinks life "sucks;" & then look at--especially EJ & Bob G.) Life is truly how we choose to live it, perceive it.

One of the greatest questions one can come across!!

Life is just just... it looks cruel due to two factors... firstly the need to compete for survival and secondly, mercy not being a part of the nature...... thus it looks cruel to the inefficient and challenging to the efficient or cunning.

Human beings had learned to minimize the need to compete by an ability to co-operate and be compassionate...... be prepared to sacrifice individual needs to an extent so as to maximize collective wellbeing. This is what gave birth to the family, the society, the nation etc. But somewhere along the line, this underlying philosophy of co-operation and compassion has become a victim of our new found value of individual freedom and enterprise which has inculcated a greater emphasis on self than what is compatible with the overall gap between needs/desires and resources. With co-operation at the minimum-must-level and maximum possible level of self gratification, it has turned into cut-throat competition to grab a greater share of resources by individuals and niche groups.

Life is always a fight for survival... we have made it look like cruel rather than challenging by our own folly and misgivings. Communism is no answer since it can kill individual enterprise and efficiency to such an extent that there could be an overall reduction in the collective well-being. Compassionate co-operation should result in higher degree of overall wellbeing as well as an equitable (not equal) distribution of resources. Since nature can only be just and not merciful towards the weak, we need to make up for it through our own mutual compassion that we fortunately are capable of, but unfortunately have almost forgotten to put to use.

The Law of Life is Survival. That is cruel. Some must die so others may feed. Success is to find meaning and hopefully beauty in the existence.

The law of life so cruel & just, pay the price & grow we must. When we stop growing we are like everything in nature, we start to die. "That's just the way I am" are the deadliest words in the universe.

Life isn't cruel or kind, life is nothing and everything because it is what we make it. Look around yourself. Look at those that live a life of strife and discord, who made their lives so difficult? Life didn't. They choose the life they lead and everything it brings. Simply enough, life will bring you the good and the bad, mostly in equal measure. It is up to you to decide what to do with it. Are you going to dwell on the pain instead of revelling in the joys? It is all in how you look at it. Life isn't cruel but we can be cruel to our lives.

Life is not cruel, Rena. Individuals are cruel to one another.

It is not a law but a choice. Today, I heard yet again another "human" plotting against another person. I saw the delight in his face as discussed how he would hurt the "offender" and make him suffer.

I was thoroughly disgusted and moved along.

I like guru and EJ answers and tend to concur somewhat. If life is so cruel it's mainly because the individual (someone) can make it so. I feel comfortable and don't think life is cruel, it's what we make out of it, really
