Stop. Stop calling yourself a democrat. This is what gives Liberal democrats a bad name and gets Cons to say we do not love this country. Whatever our mistakes here in the US we are still a free democratic society. China is a repressive totalitarian regime. Comparing the two is like comparing Hitler to Churchill
Please stop feeding the beast

Ahhh, the US treats it's people better than any other country in the world! We value the individual and their liberties and freedoms over what's best for the common good of the people. Which that's how China and nearly every other country is! Even Europe, which is a blend of socialism and capitalism, isn't up to par with us on individual liberty! Socialism may have a better humanitarian tag line, but it is economic slavery, keeping the productive/ambitious lumped together with the less productive/ambitious. They reward apathy and penalize the hard working. Being a benefit to the economy and society should be rewarded not penalized. In socialism, there is no incentive to strive to be better. So there for, socialism is an attack upon individual freedom, especially from a fiscal stand point!

The US. Without a doubt.
As to your "Both are shameful in this world," China, maybe. The US, definately not. You've been so brainwashed by the media to think that the US doesn't treat its citizens with the respect they deserve. And our constitution ENSURES and PROTECTS the rights of American citizens.
If you think your country is so bad, go move to Canada.

What you are doing is comparing apples and oranges.
Here is my take.
After living here in China for almost a year, I have a pretty good grasp of what China is really like. I still have a lot to learn and I am sure my opinions will change with time, but the bottom line is this.
This is certainly no utopia and obviously China has a way to go before they will be on parity with the western style of freedom.
However, in the last 20 years China has given their people more freedom, more say in their government then anytime in their 5,000 year history. That for the USA and other western powers to demand instant change for China is not looking at their past and measuring against their present, or their culture, their system or people and is selfish as hell.
Instant change will result in instability as there are huge political pressures and powerful people who want to live in the past that will throw all of China’s efforts in the trash and probably result in a system that’s as broken as Iraq.
Obviously, the reality of instant change, as we’ve seen in the wake of Iraq and Afghanistan and their flimsy governments, the resulting China system could prove to be as counterproductive to the West’s interests, as well as the people interests in China as what is happening in the Middle East now.
Let China move at its own pace, it’s clear as day they are going in the right direction.
We need to give China credit where credit is due and stop the China bashing. Look at the China reporting. There is always something negative to be said and rarely do we see stories of the positive directions that they are heading.
We are bombarded with stories of human rights abuses in China, while not looking at our own such as Gitmo and all the secret prisons scattered around the world, to our overflowing penal system where that’s turned into big business and the criminal justice and political system that is feeding that.
As one political leader here in China put it when a USA politician demanded that Beijing clean up its human rights abuses, ‘we’ll talk about that after you clean up your own house.’
Most importantly is the personal lessons China has taught me. In the USA we have a habit of dwelling on the negative whereas China dwells on the positive.
Every black cloud has a silver lining and no matter how bleak things may seem, there is almost always something good that comes from it. But to dwell on the negative, from personal in the individual sense to international as the country does is as counter productive as running away and not facing the issues and reasons that such destructive behavior exist.
Individually we should be better then that, as a country we must, but sadly, in both cases, the habits are part of our culture, ingrained in our psyche and hard to break.
There is enough ugliness in the world, why add to it.
Finally, the government doesn’t have me on a short leash. I’ve never been approached by any government official for any reason other then welcoming me to China and helping me with any problems I may have.
I can say and do whatever I please, as long as I don’t break the laws or my work contract. I am free to travel anywhere I want in China at any time whatsoever. There are no travel permits required, no offices to visit, no officials to contact.
What you will hear often in the press are things that are no longer true about China. For instance, in 2003 I was not allowed to drive a car outside of any large city. The law was removed by the time I returned in 2004. Yet in 2006 I’ve seen current references to travel restrictions in China from western news.
China is a country in transition and most of what you hear in the press and from our government is no longer applicable.
China’s changes are so rapid that to make declarative statements without doing the research often ends up with a lot of egg on the reporters face. The reporters saving grace is the protection of common held beliefs.
Their disservice is to both China and humanity.

I have quite a bit more about China found through my profile.
peace

USA is far better. China is still sadly lacking in human rights reform. There is absolutely no comparison.

Will, Chinese can vote off the government officials they don't like. Every year, in Chinese companies and government, Chinese get to write their opinions about their boss, colegue and the ones badly-opinioned will be removed to a different post. It's not the same as direct vote, but in the U.S. you don't have a direct vote either.

There are many things in China you can't do, or you'll be shot! And a lot of their labor is used by places like Walmart.
China is so secretive.
If you want to say the number who live a simple life and are probably better off for it, then China!
America has a terrible record with treatment of groups and classes of people. I think China has probably killed more though!
