The problem with recommending any safe level of alcohol intake during pregnancy is that the safe levels of episodic drinking have not been clearly defined. This is why we say to abstain from alcohol completely during pregnancy. As health care providers we simply cannot recommend any safe level.

We once said that an occasional glass of wine was fine during pregnancy, but since that time we have identified fetal alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol effect, which is characterized by prenatal and postnatal growth deficiency, mental retardation, behavioral disturbances and an atypical facial appearance. Congenital heart defects and brain anomalies are common and other major congenital anomalies, such as spina bifida, limb defects and genitourinary defects are seen but less commonly. This syndrome occurs in 30 to 40 percent of women who are frank alcoholics, but, as little as three ounces of absolute alcohol per day during pregnancy can result in fetal alcohol syndrome consequences.

Lesser amounts of alcohol may be associated with a variety of less severe manifestations in children called fetal alcohol effects. Minor anomalies, moderate growth deficiency, mild mental deficits, and subtle behavioral abnormalities are seen more frequently among children of women who averaged more than two to four alcoholic drinks daily during pregnancy.

One study reported that 30 percent of offspring exposed to 14 ounces of absolute alcohol or greater around the time of conception or 3.5 ounces or greater during pregnancy had impaired neurological functions.

With research showing this potential for fetal damage and long-term consequences, it seems prudent to avoid alcohol while pregnant.

in other countries drinking a glass a day is perfectly acceptable, sometimes even encouraged. however in the US it is strongly advised against. i have read that no doctor will condone it due to insurance reasons. apparently there are no studies indicating that any amount is safe. my mom said that my grandma told her to drink a beer a week when pregnant with me. i myself have only had 1/2 a glass of red wine when i was 5 weeks pregnant and drank a few beers when i was 3 weeks, it was Christmas and I did not know until New Years. i think about having a glass sometimes but there are no open bottles in my house, and i just don't see the point of opening one if that's all im gonna have. oh but when the baby comes i am definately going to have a sushi dinner with sake the day i get home (or the day after)

I work with a retired Ob-Gyn who swears that it is OK to drink a little wine every now and then during pregnancy, that they do it in Europe. I tried to look this up on the web and just received conflictong reports (I am pregnant and have been craving wine for some reason). What I would say is that probably a little won't hurt, as long as you don't make a habit out of it. I wish I could be more specific in an amount, but it is just something that you will have to use your judgment on.

I was advised by my Dr. that a glass of white or red wine with dinner would be ok, and wouldnt pose a risk to myself or my baby. She said not to do it regularly of course but once in a while was no problem. My boyfriend and I went out for a nice dinner, and we both ordered a glass of wine, my favorite kind. It tasted SO GOOD...however.......the next day I swear to you I was SO HUNGOVER from one single glass. I would never have another glass during this pregnancy again. Totally not worth it for me...

I had a glass of wine early on with my second child and she was fine. However, I drank a glass of wine when my third child was four months old and then nursed him. He slept for HOURS! If a glass of wine can affect a four month old that strongly, it is probably not a good idea to try it on a baby not yet born.

i really don't know but try not to drink at all. one glass mite turn into 2, then 2 into 3 and so on. maybe you can wait till end of 3rd trimester.

Yes, it's ok to drink a small glass of wine every once in a while when pregnant.

Studies show that it's regular drinking and drinking in large amounts that are harmful. My doctor and midwife have both said wine is ok "rarely and sparingly" during pregnancy so I would save it for special occasions.

It's best to have the wine with food in your stomach, though. That keeps it from entering the bloodstream too quickly.

Yes one glass of white wine a day is fine for baby. I mean i would exactly have a glass every day....but you get the idea. You will be fine to that. I had one every now and than, especially when i got close to calm my nerves haha. Congrats new mummy !

They say it is okay because there isn't much research on having a glass of white wine. But drinking everyday is not a good idea and it is definately not a good idea to have more than one.

A little wine will NOT hurt you or the baby.

My doctor told me it was ok to have wine "every once in a while" (I interpreted that as for the rare but special occasion), but to make it a small glass and take food with it.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
