As long as the painting is something that was made with some form of determination. If you made this quickly to just have something cheap and it shows the friend might be disappointed. If you really worked at creating something meant to be a lovely gift then the recipient should notice this. It is a very nice gesture, And personally I'd rather have something like this then an expensive item that was purchased without any heart in it.

I think it is a great gift if it was painted with the recipient in mind. I paint, and I can tell you that much time and effort is involved in a painting. Also, depending on the medium used, oil, watercolor, acrylic, etc, It can be very expensive to complete a painting. It can even be romantic because as the artist paints, he must be thinking about something...concentrating and it could be , as he paints, he thinks of the person he is painting the piece for. ( Or it could just be the nice gesture of a friend.)

Why wouldn't that be a nice gift? Its something that the friend put a lot of effort into and probably had the person they were giving it to in mind while they were painting it. Its very creative, and I would love a creative homemade gift from a friend as opposed to something you can just go out and buy.

I think it'd be a very cool gift. Then again I prefer hand crafted items. Anything, from a poem to a table to a painting, is good for me as long as someone put some effort and some part of themselves into it. It makes it much more personal than simply buying something from a store. To me it says that the person cared enough to take the time to create something specifically for me which is quite a complement.

I think a painting by a friend is one of the best gifts.

hmm... I've never actually considered the question before!
Um I think it depends. If you are a really good artist and the painting is unique, reflects on something important to the receiver, or is reminiscent of some shared memory (a good one) then great!!!!!!!!!
If the painting is a black smilie face on white paper then no. Or if the painting is really generic (like if it's Christmas a picture of Santa) also no.

The best gift. A purchased gift, even an expensive one can't compare with a gift created with thought, time, love and passion.

If it's a style, color, or something you really admired, and the friend painted it just for you, yes, it's a real treasure. But if it's a muddy brick wall that looks like her 3-year-old did it, then maybe you should just smile and put it away.
It's still great that the friend thought of you, though.

It's nice if the person is a good artist but it's kind of tricky if the person who gets it does not like the painting. It's really all about taste.
