A couple of things, first, to allow slavery.
Next, our foreign policy, where we take it upon ourselves to dictate to the rest of the world, and try to impose our political beliefs on other nations, and to militarily try to convert them to a democratic form of government.
I guess the fact we ignore the plight of thousands of homeless and hungry people right here at home, and spend our hard earned tax money on wars would be high on the list.

Remember that the United States is a unity of different kinds of people in the world. From the humblest to the most arrogants, from the worst of the criminals to the saintliest Bible-Centered citizens, The left-wingers and the right-wingers, the liberals, the moderates, the modernists and the consevatives, name all what you want. Is this the worst thing you are refering to? Remember, If USA was not originally grounded heavily with Bible-centered citizens (65% more or less) It will not become the most advanced, developed, powerful nation in the world for 400 years already.

In my opinion, the worst thing the United States has done was let the country go into an economical depression. (A.K.A The Geat Depression) Before the Great Depression, the country was in a very happy statte; optimism. We just got out as Victos of WW1. The country was still have econimcal problems. But the polictical leaders were ignoring it. As time passed the problem grew worse and worse.
I hoped this answers your question.

ps11kid.........

Alot of People are going to say the Obvious choices like the Massacre of the Native Indians and Slavery.....

The WORST thing the U.S. has done was to give Corporations the same rights as Individual Citizens and to Allow them to take their Businesses and American Jobs overseas to be Outsourced for Lower Wages....The Structure of Fascism is the union, marriage, merger or fusion of corporate economic power with governmental power.

We do NOT Manufacture anything in this Country.. Any Country that Imports MORE than they Export is in BIG Trouble.........

We are Well on our Way to becoming a Third World Country with Immigrants taking High paying American Jobs for Minimum Wage....

..........Sometimes the Truth Hurts, America....

"Fascism should more properly be called Corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." - Benito Mussolini.

"When facism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the American flag." - Huey Long

Elected two oilmen to the two highest offices in the Land.

Record oil company profits.
No real move against oil use/development of alternatives.
Inscreased dependence upon foreign sources.
Threatening the pristine North.
Business to Haliburton without bids.
Threat of more unsafe off-shore drilling.
Continual absence of our Country doing a fair share in
reducing global warming.
Turmoil with any nation with oil reserves, since we want to
devise a plan to take them from them.

This is all so transparent and criminal. Our VP will be gone soon, and Condi Rice in his place. This will give her the inside track for the next term, particularly since there is doubt Bush will finish his term either...

Blacks will vote for her, women will vote for her, and the new Mexican-Americans will...not to mention people of wealth..

believe that diversity would be good for America in briinging losers in from all over the world. Ango-saxons made America the envy of the world and now we are seeing it dismantled. The southern part of the United States may become just another ruined country like Mexico if unbridled immigration continues.

all those who said "SLAVERY" are wrong because of 2 things -
1 the word SLAVE came from the word SLAVIC (meaning whites were slaves long ago before USA enslaved blacks)

2 those 'black' folks who were brought over as slaves - were infact slaves in Africa most times or were captured during wars between Afican nations and SOLD to USA... as such USA didnt start the slave trade - they simply took advantage of it.

WORST THING DONE BY USA - allowed BUSH into office the SECOND TIME (as if the first wasnt a big enough mistake - you would think they would have learned)

I would say the injustices done to the American Indian are probably number one, followed by interment camps for the Japanese and Germans during WWII. Reasoning? Mostly because it was based on fear not fact and a more humane and resonable solution was not pursed.

Depends on what sort of size and reach you are talking about. The mass genocide of the Indian race was a pretty awful thing. When my grandmother was born she was not even considered an American, it took until 1924 before the 1st people of this land were accepted as citizens. The mass slaughter of the buffalo in order to starve the people into subservience, paying for Indian scalps, et cetera. Even up into the middle part of the 1900s they were teaching young Indian children to abhor who and what they were.

Of course if you are speaking of global reach, well we do some pretty bad things in South America, and our Corporate dictated government policy is responsible for a lot of inhumane rulers in the middle east.

From the very beginning our country has been enmeshed in violence. First, there was the decision to go to war with the British Empire. Then a near-genocidal attempt to destroy the American Indian, the original inhabitants of our country, followed by a centuries-long exploitation of the Black race. Along with this, our country has a time-honored tradition of conflict with a multitude of others: threatening to destroy our adversaries (nations unwilling to align themselves with that of our interests) through the use of an arsenal of deadly (many of them nuclear) weapons; willingly participating in the overthrow of numerous popularly elected governments unwilling to abide by our rules; demanding that other countries allow us the right to exploit their natural resources in order to maintain our own standard of living; has been, and perhaps still is, involved in the trafficking of drugs around the world; assassinates foreign leaders, aids terrorists, and supports “death squads;” has committed a multitude of crimes against humanity; has allowed the CIA, an organization much like that of the Mafia, to terrorize the world; kidnaps suspects and tortures prisoners; imprisons more of its own people than any other country in the world; is the only nation in the West that kills it’s own people through the use of the death penalty; is an international pariah, a true maverick, refusing to work with the rest of the world in order to resolve problems confronting humanity; has a long and varied history of aligning itself with a rather vicious assortment of dictators, tyrants, and despots willing to do our bidding at the expense of their own people; and, as such, is increasingly beginning to resemble the fascist movements of Adolph Hitler in his nascent 1930’s attempt to take over the world.
