If you mean the greatest generals in history then there are three who stand out with spotless or almost spotless records and great accomplishments. :
Sun Wu Tzu Chinese stategist of the warring state
period (State of Wu)

This military genius is considered by most to be the greatest. He was a very great accomplished expert and defeated six states when they were attacking Wu-in one campaign. He wrote the art of war which is read by most military accadamies in the world.

Alexander the Great: Macedonian conquere- early 4th century
B.C.
This brilliant commader conquered the great Persian Empire and further. He won victories over armies many time the size of his. He is universally famous and is the main rival of Sun Tzu.

Scipio Africannus: Roman general - late 3rd century B.C.

He reorginised the roman forces in Spain after great defeat and reorganised the remnants of the battle of Cannea(Rome's greatest defeat). He defeated in brilliant campaigns and tactics armies many times his army's size and his battle of the great plains in North Africa in 203 B.C. and his use of fire gave history a taste of what it would be like for soldiers to fall under tactical nuclear fire. He defeated that other great military genius at the time- Hannible.

Others such as Julius Caesar and Ghenghis Khan had very minor bloches on their copy books. Napoleon also was a great general but his nature and presumption let him down at the end.

If however you mean warriors as in fighters-then there are two cateogories. One, fighting together in units. At this the two supreme forces in history are the Roman Legions and the Mongol Hordes. The first had a military machine which fought as one, was like a lethel machine of rotating military teeth and had training and equipment-determination and endurance such as the like never seen in history. The second could put a rate of fie that was the medieval equivilant of the machine gun. was mobile unlike any in comparison in history and carved out the largest single land empire in history. The first were trained with the most advanced methods of the day, to a frightening degree, with military method unequalled in history and with actual, as opposed to comparitive, technology the likes not seen till the comming of the Mongols. The second trained in fighting together by a vicious and savage entrapment hunt of all manners of wild beast whom they fought hand to hand and killed. They were superbly trained warriors.

The second cateogory is individual warriors. Amonst the best for their day are the Ninja(trained from early childhood), the Sammurai(also trained from early childhood), the Spartans(also trained from early childhood), the Ghurkas(considered the most well trained warriors in the world today, the Romans(very very skilled individuals in their own right-having practiced and practiced at the stakes for swordsmanship) and the Mongols(the best warriors in the middle ages). These are the top elechon. The elite of history. There are also individual branches or units-the British S.A.S., various units of the American forces, Russian forces, Chinese forces and the Israelis. Also there are the ANZACS(the Australian and New Zealand Armies) considered to be amonst the best in the world in the twentieth and twenty first centuries. There are also others. And there are off course individuals who apply themselves in the quest for skill and knowledge of the military sciences and the art of war. All are noble warriors and all deserve a place in history. The greatest? - for my money-although the others are truelly great and deserve a place in the top elechon and near the very top itself-I would name as just being that little much better(in their art) the Shoalin Monks. Their, skill, training from childhood, dedication and milenium of experience put them over the line, to my mind, the first place, the gold medal of greatest individual warriors in history. Hope this helps.

they're some great answers here no doubt, but you need to look at what time period also what type of weapons and so on too. there could be some that no body ever heard of because of the overshadowing of some one else in history in the same time period.
