You cannot get a grant to write a book, unless one of the well-known universities, needs your expertise in a particular area.

You don't need a grant from anywhere to write a book. You simply sit down with an idea and write. Writing doesn't cost anything. Taking writing courses and getting your hands on books that teach writing skills is a must.

When the book is finished, you'll need a copy of Writer's Market to look up literary agents. You'll need to query agents who would be interested in the genre you write in. If accepted, they will work (on probably a 15% commission) to find you a publisher. That's it.

Although, I don't see how you can be a starving author if you haven't written your first book yet.

Good Luck!

Unfortunately, paying for a war has kind of put the government out of the grants for the arts business. One thing you can try is artist in residence at a local college. Do you have a degree that you could teach a writing course and get paid to write as well? The other place to try is the National Endowment for the Arts, but you will find that is a very tough thing to do. It takes a ton of paperwork and you really need to enlist the services of a grant writer - which is a very special kind of writer - in order to get you anywhere. You might be able to get a grant, but how much you could get, I couldnt say. After all, we have a war to pay for. Pax - C
