I've finished my first book and I've tried looking online for a publisher but it's not working out so well. Does any one have any suggestions?

The procedure is to get a Literary Agent to pitch the book to a Publisher. If the publisher is interested, they will publish it.

Buy a copy of The Writer's Market.
You can buy it at most large Booksellers, Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc.

The way the industry works is, mainly, through agents. An agent will take your work, read it, and if they like it they will shop it to publishers. So, what you need to find is a litterary agent. Take a look at what the writers guild of America (or Canada) have to offer. You can register your novel with them and once you do get published, you can join them.

You can also write to the publishing companies that you know of and ask if they accept unsolicited matterial. If they do, you can send in a cover letter and a sample. I've just given you a quick brief on what the "deal" is with selling a book. There are people who have written about the topic, here is a link: http://www.keepwriting.com/

you've gotten some good advice here but i would like to add please be careful. i know too many people who have gotten screwed over by agents.

have you considered self publishing? it's a lot of work but you may want to look at it.

it's somewhat difficult to get with a major publishing house, but not all that hard either. the link below is a list of some publishers that you can check into and contact directly. most of the ones on this list are okay with you contact them directly.

i hope this is of some value to you. many blessings

See who published the fantasy novels that are on the shelves now, especially ones that you like.

there are so many different publishers. Your best option (out side of getting a lit agent) is to pick up a book called the writers market, and read it through.

They list about 30 pages of publishers, what their speciality is, who to contact, if they accept unsolicited manuscripts and if they DO, how to proceed.

i could guess numerous days' wages that all of the publishers who pronounced they enjoyed your e book have been arrogance publishers - so-pronounced as by way of fact they attraction to the author's arrogance. they say they like each thing. you are able to desire to deliver them a manuscript that replaced into only "i'm a fish" repeated for pages, and that that they had be extremely chuffed to positioned up that. do not positioned up your e book with all and sundry who needs funds prematurely, because it rather is totally not likely which you will ever see a earnings. They do no merchandising and marketing of your e book, bookshops won't inventory it, and respected reviewers won't evaluation it - all of which propose you're actually not likely to sell a duplicate to all and sundry who does not already understand you. Publishers do not "examine, evaluation and edit" books - not until eventually they are already rather on the brink of being publishable, which i'm rather valuable yours isn't. (No offence, yet once you think of the individuals you have already talked to are valid, you do not understand how the industry works, which means you in all probability do not understand a thank you to jot down a e book it rather is in all probability to sell properly.) in case you recognize your e book desires greater paintings to make it publishable, connect a critique team. fairly, connect a critique team besides, by way of fact your e book almost fairly desires greater paintings, regardless of in case you think of it does not. as quickly as you have fastened all of the blunders your critique team has got here upon, or have good motives for not solving them, purchase the present version of Writers' industry or an analogous itemizing. It lists all of the publishers who're worth bothering with - this is, people who pays you on your e book and perform a little merchandising and marketing to objective to make it a fulfillment. a brilliant form of the main publishers won't evaluate you until eventually you have an agent. Writers' industry lists all of the brokers who're worth bothering with, and tells you counsel on a thank you to establish regardless of in case you go with one. paintings out which brokers and/or publishers could properly be drawn on your e book. shop on with to each of them, following their submission regulations to the letter. in the event that all of them reject you (which they in all probability will, the 1st time you attempt this), attempt returned with yet another greater proper e book. good success - it fairly is a time-eating technique, and not for the faint-hearted.

Ug. It's beyond me why someone would write, let alone read, fiction.

Seriously, can someone explain to me the point of reading something someone just made up?
