If both of you will eventually have the last name Miller, make her last name Miller.

If both of you will eventually have the last name Smith, make her last name Smith.

If his last name is Miller, and your last name is Smith, and it's staying that way, then make her Sydney Katelyn Smith-Miller or Sydney Katelyn Smith Miller.

If you're no longer married and she won't have much contact with him, make her Sydney Katelyn Miller Smith or Sydney Katelyn Miller-Smith.

I like the non-hyphened versions better. It'll save her some problems if she ever marries someone who also has a hyphened name. You wouldn't want your grandkids to be Smith-Miller-Davis-Johnsons, would you? My parents host kids birthday parties, and they've run into situations like that.

if you're married, Miller. if not, Smith-Miller (Miller-Smith sounds better, but the mother's maiden name usually comes first)

I would go with her fathers last name for two reasons.

1. If you guys marry each other She'll already have the name you take. You won't have to change it latter.

2.If you are not in a relationship with her father anymore and latter marry another man your last names will not be the same anymore. She will have neither of your names.

I 'd like to have the same last name as one of my parents.

At least her fathers name will not change.

Go with the fathers last name, that's the proper way to do it wether you're married or not. As long as he's in the picture (at least wants to be involved with his child) give her his name.
