In the short run it will be one of the most stressful situations you will be in. It is a very political atmosphere that takes some getting used to. The union if organized will not be able to get you a good contract right away. As a matter of fact you may even feel that you are paying union dues for very little results! Employers also tend to be very hostile in the first 5 years of a new union environment.
In the long run, you will have far better rights. Employers are forced to abide by the law. There usually is a transparent overtime and lay-off policy many times recognizing your seniority if you are qualified for the work. Your pay increases are usually at least keeping up with the inflation rate or higher. Your benefits are better. Sometimes they can negotiate in a pension plan too. A company is also forced to have a better safety record. Unions want their people to get involved so if you have good ideas for having a better workplace, they are all ears. You can also be elected into a union position where you can help bring about positive changes. But again, this will be more in five years from now.

if you join the union they protect you and get you good deal on everything, on the downside you have pay a little in dues

idk how you might do with an existing union and not in it urself, but you are definetly better of with a strong union for your job existing, so you should join
