so, if someone goes to an ER they can get care, even if they can't pay for it...

but someone has to pay for it? Is this why insurance rates have been increasing at an alarming degree?

have you seen the costs of an ER visit? and how much they charge for simple procedures? it's the highest costs in the hospital... and someone is paying for that, for all those that can't pay...

if we already have it, shouldn't we at least make it efficient?

If it is not funded by the Government and is privately owned they can and will turn you away,
The others cannot that is why the emergency room are always filled with illegals or welfare people for colds or headaches. It keeps the really emergency patients from getting immediate help.Hospitals are closing because of this as it is bankrupting them.
Emergency room is not free to you if you own anything or have money in the bank. They can go after you with a lawsuit for payment and can put leans on your assets. If you are illegal they cannot do a thing.

Remember, they can't turn people away, so what they do is overcharge the people who can pay. It helps keep the ER clear of non-emergencies, and it helps subsidize the costs imposed on the hospital by the non-paying.

ERs still generally lose money, though.

Of course it's not efficient, neither is hidden-cost employer provided Insurance. What is genuinely efficient is each individual making his own healthcare decisions with his own money.

Tell that to the women who bled to death waiting to be seen.
So, you go to the ER.......you have no money and no insurance. The bill is passed on to those who do via higher cost.
Now, after you're seen in the ER, they send you home with much needed perscriptions. No cash? no medicine!
