You won't be permitted to go past Scotty's Castle at that time
of year without a special authorization from the park service.
My advice is not to drive it, but take one of the bus tours from
Vegas, its safer & much less of a hassle.

Not the best time of the year to do that at all. That is quite a ride for one day. Expect temperatures to be around 115 to 125. The average temperature there then is 114!

Bring water, lots of bottled water because you will need it and if you ever break down, then you are truly needing it. It may save your life.

Here is a great link to all the information you could want need or desire on the National Park and the lodgings as well. The Furnace Creek Inn and Lodge is really nice, the Inn more so than the lodge.

A rental car? How do you know that it is conditioned for that kind of extreme heat? Check to make certain that there is coverage if you drive the car out of Nevada. Some there is, some there aren't.

You would want to enter the park from the south. There are lots of good resources for exploring Death Valley, again http://www.death.valley.national-park.com/.

I would give great caution to doing it then. I have done it many times but stayed away from July. It is lovely in the spring there.

It is truly a unique spot. Lowest in North America.
