no one really nows the answer to that. i've heard a lot of people say the chicken which i didn't think was reasonable because everything like the dinosaurs hatched form eggs first before they lived. so i would say the egg.

Primary changes to the genetic composition can only occur through mutations in the DNA. these changes can only be passed on in the gametes. as such, the egg will contain the changes to make the chicken, even though the parent was itself not a chicken.

The chicken must first have an egg to be born, whereas the egg may arise from mutations in the gamees of the parent

The chicken and the egg are in a mussed up bed together. Leaning languidly back against the headboard, the chicken is enjoying a cigarette and smiling broadly.
Meanwhile, the egg is frowning, fidgeting and is quite clearly unsatisfied. Finally the egg snarls at the chicken; "I guess that answers that!"

being a believer in creation, I would think that the chicken came first because of it's creation and then like everything else, God gave it the ability to reproduce itself....thus the egg!
