This is January. If, by the time you read our answers, you have not resolved these by yourself, I feel that you will find the rest of the year very, very long. when you have a problem of the type: kx = y (where x is the variable, and the other letters represent numbers), then you divide both sides by k. (k/k)x = y/k bacause k/k = 1, you can drop it as a factor: x = y/k Example: 3x = 9 (3/3)x = (9/3) x = (9/3) = 3 ----- If you have a problem of the type: kx + z = y, you begin by subtracting z from both sides: kx + z - z = y - z z - z is zero, so it can be dropped in a sum kx = (y-z) which is the same probelm as above, where x = (y-z)/k example: 6x -15 = 9 6x = 9+15 = 24 x = (9+15)/6 = 24/6 = 4 ------- If the problem is of this type: kx + z = mx + y, then you go by steps: subtract mx from both sides: kx - mx + z = y subract z from both sides kx - mx = y-z factor x on the left: (k-m)x = (y-z) same problem as above: x = (y-z)/(k-m) example: 5x + 3 = 7x - 9 5x - 7x + 3 = -9 5x - 7x = -9 - 3 (5-7)x = -12 x = -12/(5-7) = -12/(-2) = +6 The general idea is to get all the terms that contain the variable on one side, and everything else on the other. Then divide by the factor of the variable.
