I hate to say this, but buying walnuts from the store is a lot easier. Best to use your walnuts as squirrel feed as someone else suggested. But, if you want to go through the hassle, you will need to let the outer rind dry off, usually in mid-winter after storing them in a dry cool place, and then you can get to cracking the nuts. Don't expect a bountiful harvest...these nuts are not the commercial ones, remember.

Remember too that Walnut trees and all parts of them, including the nuts, are high in tanic acids, and will thus kill most plants near them. Do not through the wastes in a compost bin for sure.

Are they regular walnuts or English walnuts? English walnuts are edible but quite bitter.

Use a nut cracker to open the outer shell. If the nut has a strange odor, don't eat it because it has turned rancid.

Walnuts are used for snacking, in baking products, and as a garnish on salads.

Are they black walnuts or english? Either way you have to husk them and let them dry for a couple of months. English are easy to shell and come out in two nice pieces. Blacks on the other hand are a real pain to shell and usually come out in small pieces. I collect my black walnuts and lay them on the gravel driveway to get the husks off. Then I give them to a lady at work. In return I get a nice batch of brownies and near Christmas I get a batch of fudge. Now that is the best way I can think of to shell black walnuts.

You have to let them dry first..the outer covering will turn black..then you peel that off and they are ready to use...they are great to just snack on or to add to cookies or brownies. I also use mine in my squirrel feeder..they will bury them and save them for winter..kinda cute to watch :)
