xp was the original program, sp1 was the first major upgrade to correct some problems and add some features, sp2 was the final version and upgraded some features and added others. ms only supports sp2 but if you don't have it, the update site has a link to the free download.

Windows XP is an operating system. SP2 is service pack 2 which is just a windows xp upgrade with newer device drivers, security fixes, and bug patches.

XP was the original operating system product that received upgrades to security first by SP1 and later SP2 (which included SP1). XP SP3 is projected to be released in 2008.

sp2 is service pack 2 which updated WinXp. Win2000 had 4 service packs and we are still waiting for the first one for Vista. A service pack makes necessary changes in the operating system, closes security holes, etc.
