i would have to say Eddie Murray originally broke Gehrig's record for Home Runs by a first baseman ?? but that record was eventually broken by Mark McGuire and Rafael Palmiero

My first guess was Willie McCovey, but he played 135 games in the OF in 1963 when he hit 44, so that probably eliminates him, then Eddie Murray is the next one to beat Gehrig. This has since been eclipsed by McGwire and Palmeiro.
