Yup...
Column, Sentance, ambulance
My dad had a masters degree in biology, but would continually get stuck spelling words like "sentance" and hollar to Mom for help.
(old lady note)
This was before spellcheck. You youngin's have no idea how much the computer has changed the world. Back in the day, we used an actual dictionary book :)

Yes, increasingly as I grow older, even though I've been a writer all my working life. I reckon those puzzles are part of the joy of English, trailing its origins like flags to complex meaning and exotic associations, and never could reconcile myself to GB Shaw's campaign for phonetic spelling, or the American spelling of words like gaol/jail. Gypsy danced with the "y" until tamed with a bleak "i"; and faery evoked wonderland until it blew out "air" like a pricked balloon.

I used to spell countless words effortlessly, but now I have to constantly check and recheck even the simplest. Without the links in my memory supplied by other languages, I would probably not communicate very well in my native English.

In my native Romanian language one can write exactly as he hears the words.
That is why Romanian people spell harder English language.
When I write here I always "check spelling".
And I have always doubts about the arrangements of the words in the sentence. Even if some of you are good critics of mine, please appreciate my wish to express myself better in English. I promise I will learn more! Sorry for the mistakes.
