there's no rule, but your allowed to, just not suppose to. You don't steal bases with a big lead because it's embarassing to the other team, when they can't do anything right and you don't need those runs, cuz they are not insurance, go ahead, or tying runs.
It's like an unwritten rule.

Like many other people said, it's sportsmanship. Why steal when you're ahead by a lot of runs? What is the point to that? Stuffing your personal stats? That's not cool. It's kicking a team when they're down and that is just classless.
If a team steals when ahead by a lot, then don't be surprised if the guy who stole the base gets drilled in his next at-bat. In fact, I'd be angry if the guy wasn't drilled, even the next day or even next series a few weeks later if he doesn't come up after his steal in the blowout.

Well this is a heavily debated issue in the game of baseball. There are many unwritten rules in baseball and stealing a base when you are way ahead, is looked down upon. Its considered showing up a team and teams take offense to that. For example another unwritten rule is that you are not supposed to break up a no hitter once in the 9th inning, what arod did in Toronto to yell while a infielder is trying to catch the ball. Even pinch hitting for the pitcher when you are up by a significant amount.

There is no written rule against it.
It's seen as a sportsmanship thing, the gentlemanly way to play. Such steals are seen as frivolous, non-essential.
Of course, you can look at it the other way. Can it actually be seen as unsportsmanlike to stop doing absolutely everything you can to score runs? It can be perceived as a team saying "there, our lead is safe. We don't think you can come back."
Just some food for thought. After all, we've all seen some big comebacks in Major League Baseball. In a game with no clock, anything can happen.

it's not courteous ever heard of kicking a man while he's down. stealing a base isn't something you need while leading by 12 runs. just like you bunt away a perfect game. There a many unwritten rules and traditions in baseball that are vital to the culture and principals of the game.

there is no rule, you are allowed to steal. however, many teams choose not to because they want to display good sportsmanship. also when your team is leading by that many runs it is wasted energy to try and steal.

You can, but it's an unwritten rule that you shouldn't. It's a sportmanship thing, just trying not to show up the losing team.

You are allowed to but why would you? It's called sportsmanship. Why humiliate someone when you have the game won?
