Basically I'm trying to find out how far I can see out on Lake Huron, like how many miles untill the horizon. At ground level, not up in the air.

For an average height person about 3 1/2 miles to the horizon.

Well, it depends on how tall you are. At GROUND LEVEL the curvature of the earth is theoretically instant so you can't see anything (Except the tops of ripples).

This has been asked before and the best answer was:

"The distance to the horizon is given by the formula sqrt(2*radius of earth*height of your eye above sea level).

The radius of the earth is 6400 km, so if your are standing with your feet in the water and your eye is, say, 1.6m above sea level, then the horizon is 4.5 kilometres away.

If you are a tall person and your eyes are 1.8m above sea level, then the horizon is 4.8 km away. So it does indeed depend on what height you are."
