In a single word, arrogance. When the Soviet Union declined and broke up, the USA became the sole superpower on earth. As such, it thought it could buy the resources of the rest of the world cheaply and go on to consume, consume, consume with no regard for the consequences to other nations or even to future generations of Americans. When others began to resist, the USA dealt from a position of power rather than reason, thumbing its collective nose at the rest of the world. Some, called neocons, thought it was actually good and right to be doing so, and they occupy the 2nd and 3rd tier (and now even some 1st tier, as in Condie Rice) positions in the current administration. But the problem is not just with one government or president. Only when the USA learns that a child born anywhere on earth is of equal value with one born within its borders will healing begin. The religion which 85% of Americans profess teaches that splendidly, but the sincerity of that profession has to be questioned when 67% can't name one of the narratives of the life of its leader!

Umm considering Congress is our law making body they blame rests with them. The President's job is to basically follow through on congresses action. The approved Iraq, they said to fight terrorism, and congress/president we elected by us so I guess it is our fault.

But considering that the US is still in better shape then any other country, I guess we aren't in much of a mess after all.

WOW I CANNOT BELIEVE SOMEONE SAID HIROSHIMA WAS A MISTAKE!
You are the first person I have ever met that has said that. If we hadn't you realize millions of Americans and Japanese would have died in the invasion of Japan right? Maybe your grandfather, if he served, would have been killed in the invasion then you wouldn't be alive. NO I won't take someone saying that one of the smartest military/political actions in history was a huge mistake.

Not sure what mess you are referring to but the mess I see is that our elected representatives are more concerned about being re-elected than doing what is right for the country. Our government is more interested in themselves than who they represent. They have their own retirement plan and are not subject to social security like the rest of us. That is one example. They strike capitol police with their cell phones because they think they are above the laws they impose on the rest of us. They use punitive taxation to perform social engineering.

I think what we need is a complete clensing in Washington, no matter if you are Repub or Dem. I think we need term limits.

..mmm..just my opinion..ok..?.. for the most part, i think what happened is, ...
Bush and his 'influentials', have brought Americans to a place where we are one of two minds about him...
...first off, there are those who are 'afraid' because bush has pised off every one not 'in' oil in one way....or another,..

...and second, there are those who are 'afraid' Bush has so soiled Americans image at this point, that retaliations of some unkforseen nature are unavoidable now.
...the consequence is,..we are a nation in turmoil with in our own political, governmental, and international theaters....because no one understands or believes in him ... and every one of us is afraid to commit to any alternative other than the ideology we have convinced ourselves is a solution...and NO solution is viable any more.
What this next election will amount to after having the presidency be an appointment by other than popular vote or consent, is up for grabs..NO ONE is positive that the American elections are legit any more...least of all, Americans.

One word:

Apathy!

Most Americans are so used to politics as usual they don't vote and they are the silent majority.

Involve your own beliefs, politics and persuasion of a nation to your ideals, that is how you create a mess.
