While learning to walk, the best shoes are those that have soft soles such as Robeez (or some knockoff of these, which you can find at Target). I've heard that high tops are not good for new walkers. When he is ready for real shoes (actually walking), try to get him some that are fun, and he will be more likely to want to wear them. My son LOVED his light-up shoes and didn't want to take them off. When you move to real shoes check out Stride Rite, they have a line for new walkers that are great for foot development. Good luck!

I started both of my kids on the standard white walking shoes, they look a little like high tops. Payless used to offer baby's first shoes free or at a discount, check with them! I wouldn't spend a whole lot of money on shoes that will be for everyday as at this age kids' feet grow fast! Good Luck!

Alot of docs recommend shoes as they start to walk but my son hated them. I let him get used to walking then when he was good enough I started with soft soled shoes and he didn't even noticed the shoes since he was walking all over the place

If you are just in the house it's better not to put shoes on your baby.. Let him/her get used to the feel of the feet while walking... The shoes can make him/her trip and fall more easily and sometimes the bottoms can be slippery/grip too much... It's best to just let them get used to being on their own two feet... If you go out then a cute pair of shoes.. .High tops might cause ankle strain... Think how ice skates feel....

My daughter almost 11mths hated shoes also but this winter has been happy to keep them on as I guess they keep her feet a lot warmer. I'm an Aussie and bought her Osh Cosh. I suggest you don't stress and wait for winter or try a very light shoe that laces up tight.

I didn't put any shoes on my kids until winter time. They hated them too.

Robeez are awesome! http://www.robeez.com/

Also, Target has some knock-off ones they sell in the baby dept that are cute too.
