huh? I am posting this message because i had recently recieved an answer to a question i had posted and the answer was similar to "black people came here legally and were all sold to us by their homeland and most were asked if they wanted to stay or leave america".What? So what matters is that they were sold and not the 200 plus more years of slavery? How about the lynching of black men and raping of black women? Well, i can go on and on but you get the picture!

I do agree that many "white" Americans, and Americans in general can be insensitive and clueless about their historical paths it's not really surprising - because it's not in our face everyday, right? It's easy to think that the reprocusions fo what the founders of the USA shouldn't or don't affect us. I think it's easy to forget and it's easy to remember if you aren't
"white" and face some of the discrimination (not to the level that Blacks faced when they came to the country or during the civil rights movement) - it's just a difficult history and I think it's complicated. I am part white and part hispanic and I have a pretty back and forth view - I think it's horrible how this country was founded and it's quite evil and it's a fact that the USA grew and became economically stable on the backs of slaves and I would NEVER be proud of that - so I choose not to look at my home country, the USA, in a fairytale idealized way -- however, I cannot neglect the fact that despite all of the evil things done by the US that it is one of the greatest countries in the world that affords freedoms and privilages that other countries do not. I think it's also hard if you are a "white" American that feels he/she is being blamed for the huge mistakes made by those that founded the USA that we have no relation to. I just think, overall, it's a complicated issue but I don't think you can deny the atrosities that are a part of the US' history - at the same time you can' t just heap that blame on any person you deem "white".

Technically, their own people did sell them to the United States. Now, to generalize this as 'white America' is a form of bigotry on its own; you're stereotyping an entire group of people as ignorant. I don't quite know what ethnicity you are, but it's not quite a concern of mine as I don't acknowledge race as a factor in modern society.

Now, to answer your question, the oppression that followed was a result of an intolerance and overall downcasting of said people. The same happened to Italians; fact: the largest mass lynching in the united states was not done upon black skinned people - 'twas a lynching of Italians. However, I believe that all racial groups have suffered some form of bigotry at one point or another; whether in the United States or in their home country.

But to say why does 'White America' not own up to what they do and not include any other racial group is a heavy misconception. Humanity in general has goods and bads; and there are ignorant people in all racial groups. Examples are not necessary for I feel if you think hard enough, you'll realize that there are many people of other races who do not own up to what they do.

While they were sold 'legally' by their own people, slavery is not moral. But you have to understand the time difference as well; morals now are different than they were then. People thought very differently and when they lost their power, they felt that their 'property' was being stolen from them, so they attempted to 'teach them a lesson.' While this is in no way justified, this is likely how a majority of these people thought. We don't live in a perfect world, but hopefully, as time passes, we can correct our moral inadequacies.

I hope that helped. :3

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to own up to. I can't remember doing anything to anybody just because of race, religion, sex, etc, etc. If I am supposed to be sorrowful for history, well, um, sorry but no. I had nothing to do with that and will not feel any guilt for it. White America did a lot of things before the country settled and civilized, but so has the rest of the entire world, and every race has it's dark time in history. EVERYBODY should be ashamed if they followed your thought. Austria doesn't hide because Hitler was Austrian, Attila the Hun, Vlad the Impaler, the Roman empire was one of the bloodiest and most brutal civilization of all. Norwegians(pirates),Pol pot, Idi Amin (aka. the butcher of Africa),Darth Vader! OK just joking about the last one. But if I can quote you, "I can go on and on but you get the picture!). I hope you let peace be with you. You'll live a happier life if you do.

You don't like the person telling you the FACT that most of the people originally taken to the US as slaves WERE sold by their families?

How about the fact that for the past 30 years blacks have tended to sit and complain about being repressed rather than working to fit into society?

For some strange reason... when a black person actually goes out and gets an education then WORKS rather than acting like the RAP music sounds... they can be successful.

Grow up.

Quit whining.

Prove you are as good s you say you are.

And quit being a moron and voting for Democrats.. Southern Democrats led the way in opposing integration. Southern Democrats designed Affirmative action too... and if you THINK about it... Affirmative Action says "Blacks are inferior and would never be able to compete on an equal level with real men."

I'd be insulted by the thought of Affirmative action...

You aren't the only one who can go on and on....

Slavery ENDED in 1865... that's over 140 years ago. THERE IS NO ONE ALIVE who was a slave in the US. So you can't claim to have been a repressed slave.

You can complain and be part of the problem... or you can WORK and be part of the solution.

I can't make that choice for you.

Teach your kids to pay attention in school, work hard and succeed. Don't teach them to be whining losers.

why do balcks own up to the fact that it is 2007 and that armed with significant recourse to any repeat of this egregious pbehavior the playing field is fairly level now and start taking responsibiity for the here and now?

Redress of past grievances makes everyone feel a little better for about a minute and a half then it's back to business as usual.

What do you want, a hand out from people whos relatives had NOTHING to do with this? who is ripping whom off then? Half of the white relatives that I descend from weren't even in the US before the emancipation proclamation was written and the other half fought on the Union side in the civil war, one was a well decorated hero who, at the age of 12 shot and killed a confederate army general. Nobody in my family ever owned a slave or mistreated anyone because of race. In fact, many of my family were indentured servants (slaves) themselves when they arrived. Even more amazing, I'm actually part black myself and I don't want anyone to apologize to me for anything.

I have nothing to apologize for.

I haven't done anything to anybody man! Wake up! I'm not 200 years old, and I dont believe there is anybody alive today that was alive 200 years ago. Were you there? Were you victimized 200 years ago? If not, then what are complaining about? You got it good now so let it go, just let it go, nobody is gonna make a slave out of anybody, you can relax ok, it's going to be ok. Are you going to put all the victims of crimes perpetrated by the black people in the world up on a pedastal and tells us all about the horrors? If you aren't going to be fair then you are not really do much to change things.

I did not own a slave, lynch anyone or commit any crime.
YOU are saying I am guilty of these things because of the color of my skin.
THAT MAKES YOU RACIST.

YOU are not in a different boat then the KKK or the NAZIS you are in the same pathetic sick boat. YOU judge people and place guilt on them because of the color of there skin.
YOU are a sad and hatefull person. When YOU stop being a color and start being HUMAN then I will have some HOPE for you until then your in the same Catagory as the rest of the racists.

I do not know any white person that is guilty of linching anyone. Nor do I know anyone that has raped a black woman...lately.
Are you trying to insinuate that we are to be held responsible for the deeds of generations before us?
What about blacks raping whites today? Should we set them free and inprison their grandchildren instead?
This is the 21st century. I suggest you join us in it.
The wonder of our nation is you are free. YOU are also RESPONSIBLE for your own community.
If your community has no jobs make them.
If you can't make them pack a Uhaul and move...FREEDOM BABY!!!
In the US everyone feels entitled to something for nothing. Meanwhile they sit on welfare while the rest of us go out and WORK to make something of ourselves.
Every citizen has the FREEDOM to get off their couch and do the same.
I have seen your Navaho res and quite frankly it could use some infrastructure. Do you expect the government to clear the junk cars off your property for you? The third world conditions are created by those that dwell in it.
Maybe if you stayed out of the liquor store and spent that time cleaning up your OWN res you might see change does come if people bother to do the WORK it takes to bring it.

Stop revising history. Most blacks were treated well during slavery, and were better off than many free blacks. Most stayed with their former masters after slavery was abolished. Only 1% of the Southern population actually owned slaves, but I bet you didn't know that the Northerners owned slaves and were cruel to them. Union soldiers brutalized Southern civilians, black and white alike. And New York was a big slave import city. Did you know Southerners were eventually going to abolish slavery? You'd deny it even if you knew, because you're just another multiculturalist. "Evil whitey" has made the world a better place.

I think what has been done in our nations past to all sorts of minorities is horrible. The bigger question is how do we as descendants black and white move on from here?

I know there are people that don't want to admit what has happened by their ancestors (white and black) but whether you admit it or not does not make it any less real. But how do we take that reality and move forward forgiving each other and trying to make a better place for future generations?
